  3. "I go to synagogue. I study Hinduism. All paths lead to God." - MADONNA, to "60 Minutes” in an interview

  4. They See the World Differently… They Feel Differently Their Needs are Unique

  5. Zoom in: Indonesia • Indonesian school no longer becomes the center of life for the youth • School system keeps on changing from Continental Banking System look-alike to National Building Component to Industrial-Supplier sub system, to Market Place Associates. • The Result: They have broad knowledge, but no value-compass (except for comfort and exploration), and lack of life-skill ability.

  6. Closer Angle: The Needs Metaphor: Games Arena: Many choices and constant changes of the rules of the game The Fighter: Need set of values- Life-Compass--- MEANINGFUL FOCUS Beginner: Need Life Skills/Basic Arena Equipment: • Self-image Management • Dealing with Time and Priority • Expressing yourself effectively • Listening effectively • Beginning a Friendship • Dealing with Your Own Emotion • Basic Problem Solving

  7. Freeze Frame: The Response • The response of the church, school, Non Government Organization, and Parachurch: Leadership Training • LT = Outward bound + Revival Meeting + Pulpit Calling + Yell, and Uniform • No rigorous evaluation of the training impact • No continuous growth

  8. Hidden Assumption In the Indonesian culture (including in the church): • People are not equal • Leader is a powerful person • No one will follow someone without superiority • A leader should be with charisma • A leader is rare breed, one out of 100 thousand people • A leader is born • Most people are not leader. • Leadership training to make the participant superior in character and competence

  9. LCB Begins with the Bible • The Bible shows many leaders are ordinary persons: Joseph, David, Gideon, Nehemiah, The Bread-NoTalk Boy, and John • Their basis of superiority lies in their relation to God and their dependence on His power and Love • They are not always people with charisma: Joseph is an innocent or gullible person, Moses is not a speaker (people question him several times), Gideon questions himself.. David is a young chap when he is ordained • God gives preparation for His Leaders: Joseph, David, Gideon, the Apostles…

  10. LCB - Objectives Developing people who will prayerfully be able to show indicators of : • Closer relationship with God– Deeper dependence/trust • Sensitivity to His frequency….(Listening at the right spot) • Healthy self-image/self-confidence • A clear vision (and legacy to leave behind) • Competency to mobilize people toward the goal • Ability to train then trust others • Ability to see the deeper meaning of life activities

  11. LCB – Process Learning • Relation-based • Continuous • Step by step • Two way communication • Friendship-based

  12. LCB - Methods • Begins with Revival Meeting in a province • At the end of the RM, all participants will be divided into 15 groups • With the local RM committee choose about 15 persons who want to learn and grow in their leadership capacity, to take care of the groups, but they also want to begin with learning the Basic Life skills • A month after the RM, we send them a workbook to study together. The committee and the 15 chosen ones will study the workbook… (we also send dvd of my speech of the topic that is being studied). • Two weeks later, each of them will study the workbook in their group • Two weeks later, a new workbook and film will be sent. • After the third months of the RM, I or one of my senior leaders will visit the 15 leaders-to-be and the committee to pray, then discuss their problems in the field. We will learn more about self leadership and group leadership together in two days (mostly on how to deal with their group members) • The step to workbook study continues for another four months. • Then there will be a small camp for the 15 plus their best group members. Thus, about 30 people will be trained • Two months later, they have to become the committee to invite people for the second revival meeting. • Then. Step 2 till 10 will begin again • Once in a year they will be invited to the National Leadership Conference

  13. LCB - Curriculum • What Is Leadership • Biblical-based Leadership Concept Versus Secular Leadership Concept • Trust As The Main Element • Manager And Leader • Leading In, Leading Across, Leading Up, And Leading Down • How To Deal With Your Healing Needs • How To Build Your Own Vision • Your SWOT And Life Plan • How To Read The Style And Talent Of Each Of Your Group Members • How To Motivate • How To Coach • How To Build A Team • How To Evaluate The Member’s Progress And Faith Growth • How To Pray For Them • How To Communicate With Those In Power • How To Negotiate For Support • How To Involve Them • How To Bring The Concept Of Stakeholder Value • How To Offer The Opportunity To Work Together • How To Celebrate The Achievement • How To Make Decision Making Process Prayerfully • How To Build Strategic Planning

  14. The Prayer • Dedicated senior leaders • Strong and broad donors basis • Prayer support • People with long term view
