  2. The Abrahamic Covenant All families of the earth blessed through him – the redeemer comes through him God would be Abraham’s shield His descendents would be innumerable God was giving him and his descendants the land of Canaan forever

  3. The Origin of IshmaelGenesis 16 Sarai’s plan: Hagar would be her surrogate. (1-4) Hagar got proud; Sarai got mad; Abram got blamed - & then out of the way (4-6) God’s promises for Ishmael (7-14) Hagar bore Ishmael when Abram was 86 years old

  4. The Covenant of CircumcisionGenesis 17 God appears to Abram when he is 99 Name changed to Abraham – “father of a multitude” (4-6) The land is given for an “everlasting possession” (7-8) Circumcision would be the sign of covenant (9-14)

  5. The Covenant of CircumcisionGenesis 17 Sarai (“my princess”) becomes Sarah (“princess”) & would bear a son (15-16) Abraham laughs and pleads for Ishmael, but God makes certain it will not be Ishmael but Isaac that will receive the covenant (17-19) Ishmael would be a great nation (21)

  6. The TheophanyGenesis 18 The LORD & 2 angels appear to Abraham They confirm Sarah would have a son in one year (10) Sarah laughs at the thought (11) You can’t hide things from God

  7. Abraham’s IntercessionGenesis 18:16-33 The LORD states again future greatness & purpose (16-19) The LORD reveals that the sin of Sodom & Gomorrah was exceedingly great Abraham intercedes asking the Lord to spare the cities for the sake of 50 (23-26) Spare the cities for 45, 40, 30, 20, 10

  8. Abraham’s IntercessionGenesis 18:16-33 Why 10 people? Lot & Wife – 2 Daughters at home – 2 Sons – at least 2 Son in law / married daughter – 2 Sons in law to marry daughters – 2 Total = 10

The Destruction of SodomGenesis 19:1-29 The wickedness of the Sodomites (4-11) Even after being blinded, they are still trying to find the door (11) Lot told to flee for life (12-22) Only Lot, his wife & 2 daughters escape God destroys Sodom & Gomorrah (24-25) Lot’s wife looks back & became salt (26)

  10. Homosexuality is not an “alternative lifestyle” equal to marriage It is a perversion & abomination before God – Lev. 18:22 We are not “homophobic.” We fear God The cure for any sexual perversion is repentance & seeking God’s mercy Abraham saw the smoke of the destruction ascending (27-29)

  11. The Origin of Moab & AmmonGenesis 19:30-38 Lot & 2 daughters live in a cave & they fear there are no men left to marry them They get Lot drunk in order to have children by him The result was Moab & Ammon – nations of perverted morals and false religious practices

  12. Abraham’s FearGenesis 20 Abraham migrates to the Negev near Gerar where Abimelech is king & tells him Sarah is his sister (1-2) God warns Abimelech (3-7) Abimelech confronts Abraham (8-13) They make a covenant with each other (14-18)

  13. Isaac is BornGenesis 21 Isaac is born at prophesied (1-8) Sarah is upset at Ishmael (9-13) Hagar & Ishmael are sent away, God protects them. Ishmael will become a great nation (14-21) Abimelech makes a covenant with Abraham who lives in Beersheba (22-34)

  14. God Tests Abraham’s FaithGenesis 22 God tells Abraham to sacrifice Isaac as a burnt offering (1-2) Abraham journeys to Moriah (3-5) Isaac wonders, where is the lamb? (6-7) Abraham’s hope (8) Abraham prepares Isaac for sacrifice (9)

  15. God Tests Abraham’s FaithGenesis 22 The Lord intervenes (10-11) Abraham’s belief – Hebrews 11:17-19 God’s provision of a sacrifice (13-19) The descendants of Abraham’s brother, an eventual bride for Isaac (20-24)

  16. Conclusions The substitution of the ram for Isaac is a type of what God would do in the future for us in the redeemer. He would be the substitute sacrifice

  17. Conclusions Will you believe God & trust His promises, or will you do it your own way?
