  1. Plate Tectonics Vocab 12/17/12 • STARTER: • When pushing cart when mass is being added, what is going to happen to the force as mass is added.

  2. Homework: • Frayer model • Word Wall

  3. P Predict • To state, tell about, or make known in advance, especially on the basis of special knowledge.

  4. P Interpret • To give or provide the meaning of; explain; explicate; elucidate to conceive the significance of; construe.

  5. P Impact • To have an immediate and strong effect on something or somebody

  6. P Relate • To tell; give an account of, or describe in some detail

  7. P Crustal Features • Relating to or characteristic of the crust of the earth or moon

  8. P Weathering • The process by which water, ice, wind and heat act to break down rocks.

  9. P Erosion • The process by which wind, air, ice, and gravity remove and transport material from one place to another.

  10. P Deposition • The settling out or placement of rock, particles of rock, or organic matter, generally referred to as sediments, after transportation by wind, water, ice, or gravity.

  11. P Ridge • A long narrow hilltop or range of hills

  12. P Plate Tectonics • The theory that the lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates that move around on top of the asthenosphere

  13. P Convection Current • The circular motion of liquids or gases caused by density difference that result from temperature differences.

  14. P Pangaea • The single, huge continent that existed 245 million years ago.

  15. P Continental Drift • The theory that continents can drift apart from one another and have done so in the past.

  16. P Divergent Boundary • The boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other.

  17. P Sea-floor spreading • The process by which new oceanic lithosphere forms as mid-ocean ridges.

  18. P Rift • Region where tectonic plates pull apart; divergent boundary.

  19. P Convergent Boundary • The boundary between two colliding tectonic plate.

  20. P Subduction zone • The region where oceanic lithosphere sinks down into the asthenosphere at a convergent boundary.

  21. Trench • A deep depression of the sea floor caused by the subduction of one plate under another

  22. P Transform Boundary • The boundary between two tectonic plates that are sliding past each other.

  23. P Fault • Displacement of rock layers in the Earth's crust in response to stress, accompanied by a break in the continuity of the rocks on each side of the fault line.

  24. P Topographic Maps • the detailed mapping or charting of the features of a relatively small area, district, or locality.

  25. P Satellite Map • Satellite imagery consists of photographs of Earth or other planets made by means of artificial satellites
