  1. Literary Techniques By Jamie Provost The Cry of the Icemark

  2. Simile “The werewolf was approaching with slow, deliberate steps as though it was enjoying the moment just before the kill, like a cat with a helpless mouse within easy reach.” pg. 3 It is relating to the mood of the novel in the scene. The mood is desperate because Thirrin is desperate to get out of this situation and be in a safer spot where she can’t get killed.

  3. Simile “Then, like the shatter of broken glass, the enemy burst into view” pg. 152 This relates to the tone at the moment because the tone is frightening. The army just comes out of nowhere and now Thirrin must fight against the best army they know which is frightening to her.

  4. Personification “ A silence fell of such intensity that Thirrin could hear the blood whispering in her ears.” pg. 153 This relates to the mood because the mood is suspenseful. You have no idea what is about to happen because no one is saying anything. You’re just sitting waiting for something to happen and what ever happens can change your life.

  5. Personification “Immediately flames belched out into the cold air, then settled down to burn steadily, quickly warming the atmosphere.” pg. 235 The mood is fanciful at the moment. Because Thirrin has never seen anything like the fire place. It amazes her how it works and how quickly it works.

  6. Simile “They seemed whiter than the surrounding snow, the smallest of them were longer than her fingers, and the fangs looked as lethal as ivory cavalry sabers.” pg. 273 Its meaning to the present mood is to describe how ferocious, and frightening the leopard that stood directly in front of them was. It said the snow leopards were huge and their teeth looked deadly which made Thirrin shiver.

  7. Simile Even though both Thirrin and Oskan had been told that the leopards could talk, they had expected them to sound like the werewolves, uttering the gruntings and growlings of an animal in a way that somehow resembled speech.” pg. 273 Its meaning is to the tone is to describe the leopard sounds. The leopard sound formal, unlike what they expected it to sound like..

  8. Simile “Several huge leathery creatures dropped out of the darkening evening sky and literally stepped out of flight, like fashionable ladies descending elegantly from a carriage” pg. 253 The tone of this quote is elegant. It is elegant because of the fashionable appearance they make into the room.

  9. Personification “And so, as the last rays of the winter sunset bathed the naked trees in a glorious light of red and gold, they were all cut down where they stood around their banner.” pg. 159 The tone of this is joyous. It is joyous because the just won the battle and now the sun is shinning in a way that gives it a glorious appearance.

  10. Irony “In very different circumstances he would have found the situation almost amusing: from arrogant certainty of success to a desperate struggle to survive in less than two hours. But he had no time to consider such ironies.” pg. 158 This statement is ironic because the best army known is being beat by the small army of the Icemark that is left from the first battle. It relates to the theme because the theme is don’t judge anyone by size or appearance and that is what Polypontian Army did.
