  1. Monday 9th January Final Writing Revision • Inform/explain • Describe • Persuade • Argue Learning Objectives To remind ourselves of the techniques we should use to succeed in each written question To use this and our mock targets to improve our weakest written area

  2. INFORM/EXPLAIN DESCRIBE ARGUE PERSUADE Talking of sickness, isn’t it time we stopped pretending it’s not happening?  It’s staring us in the face!  Something must be said; something must be done!  Old people are wearing too much beige. There I’ve said it now. I may make some enemies with these words but I simply can’t bear it any more; the sight of a Saga coach shedding its passengers and they’re all wearing beige; beige anoraks, beige overcoats, beige hats, beige trousers;  it’s obscene. (The very word ‘beige’ is obscene; being impossible to pronounce except with a mild French accent. I even believe it means “the colour of the liquid that oozes out of the small intestine.”) Don’t they realise they don’t HAVE to wear beige, just because they’re old. Red, yellow, blue, green, grey, black and white are available too, you know , dearie! (OK, I’ll admit that the occasional racy old woman will sport a daring turquoise ‘windcheater’ but other than that it’s beige.) The most important part of nursing is caring for people and I think I would be good at this because I have several younger brothers and sisters who I regularly look after. I have also volunteered to be a peer mentor at school which involves listening to younger pupils talk about their problems with issues such as bullying, options or home life and offer advice. I find it very rewarding to know that I have helped someone else and would enjoy a job which enabled me to do this. As well as being caring, nursing needs people to be very organised…… Cold. The leaves – crimson, gold, emerald turning brown at the edges – floated gracefully to the frozen ground like the butterflies who had vanished with the end of the summer many weeks before. Passers by could see their warm breath, spiralling into the thick, chilly air which surrounded them like a icy blanket. Cold. The NSPCC receive over 500 calls everyday about children who are being mistreated, abused, neglected, beaten and tormented by the people who are supposed to love and care for them. We must rescue children from this terrible abuse, but we need your help. Just £2 a month will make an enormous difference. Will you help us end child cruelty – for good? Call us now.

  4. Look back at your mock paper. Which was your weakest writing question? What were your targets? • Choose the appropriate task from the questions opposite. • Aim to copy the style in the examples from the first part of the lesson by using the same techniques and meet your targets

  5. Reviewing your work • Write your targets underneath your paragraph(s) from today. • Tick whether you have met them and circle on your work where you think the evidence of this is.
