  2. Biography Birth: April 23, 1791 Attended Village Acedmy Graduated from Dickison College 1809 studied law and was admitted to bar 1812 Joined a volunteer light dragoon unit 1814-1816 Began Political Career in Pa House of Representatives.

  3. Biography Cont. 1814-1816 Began Political Career in Pa House of Representatives. Elected 17th U.S Congress Chairman of U.S House Committee on Judiciary 1832-1834 Served as ambassador to Russia Reelected 1837 and 1843

  4. 1834-1843 elected democrat to U.S Senate 1845-1849 Served Secretary of State for James Polk 1852-1866- Named President of trustees of Franklin and Marshall College 1853-1856 Served as Minster to the Court of St. James

  5. Election Details Buchanan was nominated 1856 Became 17th Ballot Former President Millard Fillmore's “ Know Nothing” Campaign helped defeat John Fremont. Competition between Buchanan and Fremont

  7. Terms of Election • He held the right of individuals to own slaves (Constitution) • 1856 Nominatied Democrat • Ran Against Republican John Fermont and Know Nothing Millard Fillmore • Won after Hotly Contest Campaign ( Civil War was threatening if Republicans won)

  8. Historical Events • Buchanan was last Pre Civil War President • He had to deal with Increasingly Contentas Sectionalism. • Confederates were formed while he was in office. • 1857 Depression called “ Panic of 1857”

  9. He did little to alleviate pressure • Dred Scott Court Case , though against slavery, he believed this case proved Constitutionally. • By reelection he had lost support and knew he couldn’t fix problems that would lead to succession
