Oman Education – History • Education system in Oman till the mid of 20th century was pretty backward • It was purely dominated by males who studied Quran, Arabic, math and history • Students were sent abroad because of the lack of University • Omani leaders are considered as pillars of education who began imparting education in the society • Post mid of 20th century education seeds of education were sown for enhancement of the future of Oman society
Dawn of a new era • In the reign of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, education was given importance both men and women • Rise in number schools and subjects offered in schools to encourage people to study • With only 3 govt. schools providing education to slightly more than 900 pupils, education still needed the right boost • Finally, first university was set up named Sultan Qaboos University in 1986 • Post that situation changed drastically
Current scenario - Oman Education • Pre school education • Provided to children who are less than 10 year old • Basic education • Consists of 2 cycles • First cycle covers grades 1 to 4 • Second cycle covers grades 5 to 10 • Secondary education • International establishments improving language skills • Higher education • Covers number of colleges affiliated to Sultan Qaboos University
Contribution of great leaders behind Oman’s education His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and the great leader Dr P Mohamed Ali’s combined efforts flourished education in Oman Dr P Mohamed, a civil engineer from India, took sincere efforts in developing education system in Oman He set up schools and colleges in Oman for providing quality education to the people of Oman and India:- Indian School Al Ghubra Oman Dental College Oman Medical College Caledonian College of Enginerring Behind P Mohamed Ali’s vision to strengthen education was his inclination towards empowering education in the society.
