  2. The Land • Location: Iran is located in the Middle East, bordering the Gulf of Oman, the Persian Gulf, and the Caspian Sea. It is between Iraq and Pakistan. • Landforms: The Zagros mountain range and the Alborz mountain range are found in Iran. Also common to Iran are various deserts.

  3. The Land (Continued) • Water systems: The Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf are found around Iran. • Natural Resources: In Iran, petroleum, natural gas, coal, chromium, copper, iron ore, lead, manganese, zinc, and sulfur are found.

  4. Climate and Vegetation • Native Wildlife: Asiatic cheetah, bears, gazelles, wild pigs, wolves, jackals, panthers, Eurasian lynx, foxes • Common Vegetation: Fruits and flowers

  5. Government • Political Leaders: Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • Type of Government: Theocratic Republic • Life Expectancy: 69.35 years • Population: 68,278,826

  7. Economy • Type of Industry: Oil refining, petrochemicals, steel, and copper • Major Exports: Oil, fruits, nuts, animal hides, processed foods, and spices • Literacy Rate: 79.4% of people age 15 and over can read and write. • Currency: Iranian rial

Culture • Traditional Clothing: Headscarves, long skirts, vests, shirts • Traditional Foods: Rice, khoresht, aash, kookoo, pollo, and wheat • Languages Spoken: Persian, Turkic, Kurdish, Luri, Balochi, Arabic, and Turkish • Religions Practiced: Muslim, Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, and Baha’i • Architecture/Building Styles: Buildings in Iran often feature circle and square designs, as well as columned porches. They are also made with clay or mud.
