  2. Agenda – Day 1 Workshop start and welcome 11:00 Round table presentation Project presentation 11:30 FREILOT services • Acceleration limiter 12:00 • Lunch 12:30 • Adaptive speed limiter 13:30 • Eco driving support 14:00 • Intersection control 14:30 • Delivery space booking 15:00 • Coffee break 15:30 • Evaluation 15:45 • Workshop ends 17.00

  3. Agenda – Day 2 Workshop start and welcome 09:00 Short summary from Day 1 09:15 Business models 09:30 Exploitation 10:00 • Coffee break 10:30 • Discussion session (evaluation, • implementation, operation) • Lunch 12.00 • Worskhop ends 12:45

  4. Background European city reality • Congestions • CO2 emissions • Pollution • European freight operator’s reality • Economical competitiveness, including: • Lower fuel consumption • Lower CO2 emissions • Lower level of pollution

  5. Targeted improvement Drastically increase energy efficiency of goods transport in urban areas through better speed adaptation (mainly reduction of stops and reduction of accelerations). Fuel consumption could be reduced by up to 20-25% Frey et.al. On-road vehicle emission workshop, San Diego, CA

  6. Objectives 1. Based on one year of real-life trials show that FREILOT services bring measurable and quantifiable benefits reducing up to 25% of fuel consumption on equipped trucks in urban areas 2. Ensure FREILOT services after-project life 3. Expand FREILOT services to more fleet operators, cities

  7. FREILOT – A holistic approach • Traffic control: Energy efficiency optimised intersections • Vehicle: Adaptive acceleration/speed limiter • Driver: Enhanced eco-driving support • Fleet operator: Real-time delivery space booking • No single solution can drastically • increase freight energy efficiency!

  8. FREILOT – A win-win scheme • The four elements of the FREILOT service will be used in the following innovative, integrated, incentive based, win-win scheme: • City or road authorities responsible for traffic in a pilot location will implement a traffic management scheme giving priority to goods vehicles on certain roads and/or during certain times of the day; • Only goods vehicles equipped with acceleration/adaptive speed limiters and eco-driving support function will be eligible for priority on these roads; • In addition, the pilot cities will offer a service to these delivery vehicles for dynamically scheduling of loading/unloading spaces.

  9. FREILOT – a tool for cities Cities would need to update their traffic management system to support selective priority for eligible goods vehicles. Many cities already have bus priority scheme, which could for very low cost be adapted for this; Cities benefit from the possibility to “steer” goods traffic towards preferred roads or preferred times of the day (e.g. 5-7 in the morning), through an incentive-scheme. As a result, these cities benefit from lower overall fuel consumption (considering all traffic participants), leading to lower CO2 emissions. Pilot cities: Bilbao – Spain Helmond – Netherlands Krakow – Poland Lyon – France

  10. Facts and figures Start date: 1 April 2009 Total budget = 4 M€ (250.000 € reserved for new partners!)
