  2. The Précis A précis is a clear concise, orderly summary of the contents of a piece of writing.

  3. How do you pronounce this strange word- précis? • Pray-see I used to pray to see, until I got my glasses…now I can see everything just fine!

  4. A précis is a : • A short summary- • usually about 1/3 the length of the original passage. It contains no opinions and MUST go in order from the original. It maintains the author’s • Purpose • Tone • Organizational structure

  5. Understand the central idea of each sentence. Cross out unneeded description. Summarize each sentence. Look at the example on the right. There is no icon in Canadian business more universally revered than Tim Horton. Would become Tim Horton is a revered Canadian icon. . OK, this is not so hard. To write a précis, condense sentences.

  6. Remember the following: • A précis retells the highlights of a text, keeping the tone and organizational structure, so a reader will know the main idea. • A précis has only the essential details, and they must be correct & accurate. Precis

  8. Summary • A condensed version of the text’s main points. • Conveys the author’s main ideas.

  9. ExplicationVery short summary- - only 1 or 2 sentences • Summarizes the main idea—gives a very brief explanation of what the whole text says • Just like a TOPIC SENTENCE or a THESIS STATEMENT

  10. Explication example: • The Odyssey is an epic poem about the adventures and travels of the Greek hero Odysseus. It was written thousands of years ago by the blind poet Homer in 900 B.C. Although it is an ancient text, it still remains a classic today and is read by most high school students, who find its themes and lessons relevant to their lives. • Explication –Homer’s Odyssey remains a classic epic that is still relevant for today’s students.
