  9. JHO VIEWS • Did not use discharge system - at all • Written discharge notes much faster and easier • Self taught, no time for formal training • When competent in system didn’t see the point of training

  10. JHO ON OTHER APPLICATIONS • Used other systems, but also self taught & used someone else’s password • Found radiology and lab results very useful • Uses these results as a good guide to treatment • Written report arrives in a few days but treat before this arrives

  11. Checks the running of the system very enthusiastic about the system This system developed April 1996 has 3000 codes for diseases SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR

  12. SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR • old system ICD9 not very efficient • Had 1000 outstanding coding episodes before which is equal to £300,000-£500,000 • Professor Spence now settles his debt every day due to this new system!

  13. SECURITY • Every member of staff has their own personal username & password • After two minutes automatically logs out of the system • All the patients have their own patient number which has to be entered rather than their name

  14. BACKUP • Any data entered onto the system is stored on a file server • Data backed up nightly onto disk • Printout every morning to say how backup proceeded • Backup disks stored in fireproof safe in hospital • At end of week backups taken away and stored off site
