The not so New Petroleum Methods • Taken from Massachusetts • Developed to yield risk based fraction concentrations • Volatile Petroleum Hydrocarbons [VPH] replacing GRO • Air Phase Petroleum Hydrocarbons [APH] • Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons [EPH] replacing DRO • Analytical costs a little higher and reports need a little more explanation for clients

VPH Analysis • Similar to GRO, except specifies two detectors and breaks aliphatic chromatogram into sections [fractions] by elution time • Sample collection similar to GRO [size] • Purge and Trap/ Gas Chromatography with photo-ionization detector for aromatics and flame ionization detector for aliphatics • http://www.mass.gov/dep/cleanup/laws/vph0504.pdf

Feedback Requested: Deborah.Stahler@maine.gov UNDERSTANDING EXTRACTABLE PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS and VOLATILE PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS WATER TEST RESULTS The purpose of this informational handout is to help you understand petroleum test results for your drinking water. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] relies on laboratory tests called EPH [Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons] and VPH [Volatile Petroleum Hydrocarbons] to test for the presence of gasoline or fuel oil in drinking water. These tests provide information needed to determine if drinking water supplies near petroleum spills are contaminated with petroleum above health-based guidelines. http://www.maine.gov/dep/rwm/petroleum/vphephexplanationforhomeowners.doc
