So, Do You ... • Is your business a fly by the seat of your pants • Do you go to work and just see what happens when you get there • Do you have any goals or plans • Have you sat back and taken a good look at your business • Is your business consistent with everything it does, does it have a theme, is your marketing consistent • Do you customers know what you do • Do you know where your business is heading • Forward / backward • Where do you want it to be in 12 months • Do you have an exit plan

  3. Without A Vision • You jump from one project to another • No one thing to focus on • No clarity of what you are doing • No purpose in what you are doing

  4. “If you don’t know where you are going, you will end up somewhere else”

  5. So What Is A Vision? • A written picture of what your business will look in 3-4 years • A vision answers the question “Why does my business exist?” • A vision is a starting point for: • Your business plan • Plotting your goals • Strategic planning

Creating Your Vision • Writing down your vision gets your thoughts moving • Use a large sheet of paper or a journal, draw pictures and write down whatever comes to mind • Quiet thinking time & brainstorming • Imagine looking at your business in the future through the eyes of a stranger • Where is your office • How many staff do you have • What products or services do you offer • What geographical area does your business cover • What is your turnover, your profit • Who are your customers

  8. Now You Have Your Vision Let’s set some GOALS ... Your goals will answer the question: HOW AM I GOING TO ACHIEVE THIS VISION? Set 6 business goals to start, across a broad area of your business.

Now For The Goals • Create a logo that would stand alone • Create a tag line that sold the product • Develop a distribution method • To have product in at least 60 stores around NZ in 12 months • Create a frenzy of activity with a unique product • Do this from a home-based warehouse with a 6 month old baby

Set Up Warehouse • Yes, this was all achieved from a home based warehouse • Yes, Leaping Frogs presented a professional image to its customers • Yes, this was manageable along with raising baby and supporting my husbands business • Yes, in the first 12 months the product range increased to over 500 products • And no, no-one was hurt in the making of this business

  19. ACHIEVING GOALS • Don’t set huge goals • Break them down into small achievable ones • Frame your vision - so you can see it daily • Record your goals and action steps • Recruit a Business Mentor

  20. Business Mentors • Where else are you going to turn? • They’ve “been there, done that” • It’s usually free • Expand your social network • A trusted, long-term relationship

  21. As you can see, the rewards are many, and the risk is non-existent. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by finding a good mentor. Every entrepreneur should have one.

  22. Summary • Include yourself in your vision • Where do you see yourself in 3 years • What will your role be in your business • How many holidays a year will you take • How many hours will you work • What will your income be • Where will you be living • Who will be your mentor or advisor
