The Jamshedpur TISCO plant, then known as Sakchi, began the production of pig iron from December 1908 and also produced the first specimens of steel the next year. By the time India achieved independence in 1947, TISCO has been able to expand its production to about one million tones. During the pre-Independence era, TISCO paved the way to a great extent to a sense of industrial development that fostered a pride in national power. While India was entering a new era of industrial mobilization through the development of TISCO, these initial forays into development were not supported by the British. After the war, IISCO or Indian Iron and Steel Company were formed. Later, the Mysore Iron and Steel Works also took its roots and started working on steel production. Bengal Iron Works merged with IISCO after some time. In 1937, SCOB or Steel Corporation of Bengal was formed that started to make steel in Asansol. SCOB also merged with IISCO later in 1953.
