  1. Mammals By Katie O’Dell

  2. Audience • 2nd grade • Average students • Middle class community

  3. Environment • Individually or in small groups • At a computer

  4. Objective • The students will learn about mammals from the savanna, marine, and temperate forests. Given this information, they will take a quiz with six mammals. Students should be able to identify the biome each mammal lives in by locating it on the map and selecting the correct biome out of a list. They will be able to complete the quiz with 80% accuracy.

  7. Mammal Biomes

  8. Mammals live all over the world! You can find mammals living in mountains, in oceans, and in forests.

  9. These different places are called biomes. Each biome is home to different types of mammals.

  10. Hi kids! My name is Ted and I like to learn about mammals. Lets go!

  11. Savanna

  12. Savannas, or tropical grasslands, are found in Africa, South America, India, and Australia. Savannas get almost as much rain as a tropical rainforest, but are so windy very few trees grow. There is a dry season and a rainy season.

  13. Some mammals found in the savanna are giraffes, zebras, lions, and rhinoceros.

  14. Giraffes are the tallest land mammals in the world. They can be 20 feet tall! They eat fruit, leaves, and grasses using their big lips and long tongue.

  15. Rhinoceros are the second largest land mammal. They eat short grasses. They have large horns they use to define their territory, fight off predators, and dig up soil. Quiz

  16. Marine

  17. The ocean covers two-thirds of the earth and is the home of over 118 species of mammals.

  18. Mammals who live underwater have to be able to hold their breath for long periods of time. Some mammals who live in the ocean include whales, seals, dolphins, walrus, and manatee.

  19. Leopard seals get their name from their spotted coat. They are the only type of seal that preys on warm blooded animals, like penguins. They are fast swimmers and also eat fish and squid.

  20. Walruses have tusks up to three feet long. They use them to chop breathing holes in the ice and to get out of the water. They eat starfish, mollusks, fish, and seals.

  21. Blue whales are the biggest animals in the world! They travel together in groups called pods. They eat krill, tiny fish, by filtering them through their special baleen plates. Quiz

  22. Temperate Forest

  23. Temperate forests have warm summers, cold winters, and rainfall throughout the year. They are found in North America, Europe, and Asia.

  24. Mammals that live in the temperate forest include bears, squirrels, raccoons, and foxes.

  25. Red foxes are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They have very good hearing. They eat almost anything, including insects, small mammals, and even human garbage.

  26. Black bears are great at climbing trees. Even though they are called black bears, their fur can be brown. They usually eat fruit, nuts, berries, and roots. They will also eat honey, fish, and small mammals. Quiz

  27. Now you’ve learned about three biomes mammals live in.Ready to take the quiz? Study mammal biomes Take the quiz

  28. Mammal Biome Quiz

  29. Instructions • Each question asks where a mammal lives. Using the map and the information you read, pick the correct biome each mammal lives in from the list.
