Proteins are important because they are complex macromolecules that carry out many functions in the body including: • Growth and Repair • Signaling from one cell to another • Defense against invaders • Accelerating chemical reactions Proteins
Proteins are the cell's 'workers'. You have many thousands of different proteins in your body. Some are used as building blocks: your hair and nails contain the protein keratin. Other kinds of proteins carry oxygen around your body, fighting infections and detecting the light entering your eyes.
