What are adjectives? • Four main types: • Descriptive adjectives add detail and description to a noun; “tallman” or “delicious pizza. • Limiting adjectives specify or limit a noun; “my car” or “the three pizzas” • Predicateadjectives follow the linking verb and modify the subject; “I am interested in cooking” or “She is scared of the spider”
What are adjectives? (cont.) • Verbals (specifically participles and infinitives) can act as adjectives; “The restaurant, averaging 567 customers a night, is doing pretty well,” or “The man, startled by the spider, screamed.” • Degrees- base, comparative, superlative. “Hamburgers are good, tacos are better, but steak is the best.”
What are adjective phrases? • A phrase that can replace an adjective to give more detail: Instead of saying “The man was rich,” say “The man was rich beyond your wildest dreams.”
