  2. California Statewide AHEC Program Mission Statement To improve access to quality healthcare for underserved populations of California through academic community partnerships

The CaliforniaAHECProgram Goals • Increase community-based health professions training programs • Increase the diversity of California’s health workforce • Strengthen collaboration and develop partnerships between institutions with similar missions • Support communication between community and academic partners • Record, study, and document outcomes

What do California AHECs Do? • Conduct programs associated with one or more of CA program objectives • continuing professional education • community clinical experiences for HP students • teaching residents and students how to do community health education • career pathways programs • Serve as the health workforce arm for community health centers • Serve as conveners to address emergent community needs

California AHEC Scholars Program In Community Health • A two-year longitudinal, interdisciplinary curriculum divided into three components: community-oriented education, clinical training and community-based hands-on activities that supplement students’ existing health training programs • Health Professions Students Participants • Dental Hygiene • Medical Assistants • Nursing • Community Health Workers • Physician Assistants/ Nurse Practitioner • Public Health • Social Work • Medical Student • Allied Health • First year outcomes of Community Projects • 9 types of Sites • 91% of student projects were in underserved sites

  8. Medical Education • AHEC is working with UCSF SJV Prime Students to create a 1 unit course, Community Engagement. • Goal: SJV Prime students train in CHCs in the Central Valley

  9. Benefits to Community Clinics • Continuing education for clinic providers • Influence on academic curriculum • Opportunities to partner with schools for student, intern and residency placements • Assist in overcoming workforce shortages
