  1. Summary of Common Core Standards in Mathematics and Implications for Higher Education Math Faculty Conference September 20, 2012 University of Central Oklahoma Tamara Carter Oklahoma City Community College tcarter@occc.edu

  2. Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Initiative • Focus • Coherence • Rigor www.corestandards.org

  3. Mathematical Practices • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them • Reason abstractly and quantitatively • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others • Model with mathematics • Use appropriate tools strategically • Attend to precision • Look for and make use of structure • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

  4. Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) Now – 2014: Shift to CCSS and pilot test PARCC Assessments 2014-2015: CCSS and PARCC Assessments ParccOnline.org

  5. PARCC Assessments • Provide clear target for K-12 student • System of Assessments in grades 3-HS • Provide feedback for prompt interventions • Placement into entry-level, credit-bearing courses

  7. ccsstoolbox.com/parcc/PARCCPrototype_main.html

  8. Feedback Opportunities • Performance Level Descriptors (Policy and Content levels) • Scores of 4 (solid command) or 5(superior command) earn CCR determination • PARCC College-Ready Determination Policy • A combination of Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II or the Algebra II test alone • At least 75% of students who earn CCR will earn C or better in entry-level, credit-bearing course • College Algebra, General Math, Intro Statistics • September 27 • bit.ly/PARCCCRDPLD-OK

  9. Considerations for Higher Education • What is an entry-level, credit-bearing course? • What should be the “default” general education mathematics class? • Are we providing a clear target for high schools? • Are our courses aligned with CCSS? • Do we expect explanations or just computations? • How can we serve students who earn a College and Career Ready score before 12th grade?
