  2. DeMolay Gold Key ProgramLesson Two

  3. Who Was Jacques DeMolay? • The Order of DeMolay was founded in 1919 • The nine young men who founded the Order of DeMolay chose to name their new club after Jacques DeMolay: the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar

  4. Early Life • Little is known about his early years • He was born in 1244AD in Molay, Haute-Saône, in the county of Burgundy • In 1265, at age 21, he was dubbed a Knight • Then he became Grand Master in 1292

  5. Who were the Knights Templar? • Formed by: Hugues de Payens • Purpose: to protect Christian pilgrims in Israel • Lived: under strict monastic vows and answered only to the Pope • They also prevented violence against Jews and Muslims • NOTE: It was NOT the duty of the Knights Templar to wage crusades

  6. England and France • Years earlier, King Phillip IV of France, also known as Phillip the Fair, had illegally confiscated large areas of land in Europe from English noblemen. • The two kingdoms were gathering their resources to fight a war against each other to settle the matter. • This is why they refused to assist Jacques DeMolay

  7. Phillip the Fair Gathers Power • Phillip imposes taxes on churches • Raises taxes on his citizens • Confiscates all possessions from all of the Jews and expels them from France

  8. Pope Boniface VIII Responds • Pope Boniface VIII denounces the tax as illegal • Boniface insists that a King does not have the power to tax the church

  9. King Phillip Arrests the Pope • King Phillip sends Guillaume De Nogaret, Phillip’s personal lawyer, backed by French soldiers to arrest and torture the Pope into confessing to a long list of fictional crimes.

  10. The Charges Against Boniface • Not being the “real Pope” • Murder • Heresy • Sodomy • Devil Worship • Keeping a small demon as a pet

  11. The Rescue of Boniface • Guillaume De Nogaret tortures Boniface VIII. • Some accounts accuse DeNogaret of excessive cruelty by Medieval standards, possibly even mutilation. • Boniface is rescued but dies a month later due to the trauma of his torture. • Guillaume is excommunicated, barred from all sacraments of the church.

  12. Pope Clement V • The next Pope, Clement V, was surrounded by French soldiers loyal to King Phillip during his entire time as Pope. • Clement V was Pope when Jacques DeMolay was arrested.

  13. The Arrest of the Knights Templar • King Phillip owed a huge sum of money to the Knights Templar. • He decided to erase that debt and acquire even more money by arresting the Knights Templar on false charges and confiscating their lands and resources. • He made all of the same accusations against the Knights Templar that he had made against Pope Boniface VIII.

  14. Rules of an Inquisition • According to Canon Law: • The church determines guilt or innocence • Civil authorities carry out punishment • What Phillip did: • Determined guilt without a trial • Publicly declared that only a Satanic “false Pope” would allow these crimes to go unpunished • Demanded that the church agree with his verdict

  15. Forged Confession • Jacques DeMolay was tortured for years but never confessed. • A forged written confession was presented to the Cardinals who sat in judgment. • From Jacques DeMolay’s reaction to the confession, the Inquisitors admitted that they doubted it was real. • King Phillip ordered his soldiers to interrupt the trial and burn Jacques DeMolay at the stake for retracting a confession.

  16. Fidelity • Despite years of torture and even while being burned at the stake, Jacques DeMolay never confessed and never tried to shift blame onto an innocent person especially his Brother Templars who were also accused.

  17. Legacy • In France today, the name of Jacques DeMolay is revered for his opposition to totalitarianism and heroic stand against tyranny and bigotry. • But that is not quite the end...

  18. The Chinon Parchment • The Chinon Parchment is a historical document discovered in September, 2001. • It seems to prove, in conjunction with other historical documents that Pope Clement V absolved the Jacques de Molay, and the rest of the leadership of the Knights Templar from charges brought against them by King Phillip IV's Inquisition. • This has long been thought to be the case because of other documents, but the Chinon Parchment pulls the rest together with a very high degree of certainty.
