  2. The Inside Of A Computer By : Nathaniel Brown

  3. CPU Pronounced as separate letters it is the abbreviation for central processing unit. The CPU is the brains of the computer. Sometimes referred to simply as the central processor, but more commonly called processor, the CPU is where most calculations take place. In terms of computing power, the CPU is the most important element of a computer system.

  4. Motherboard A motherboard is the underlying circuit board of a computer. A motherboard can come in many configurations to fit different needs and budgets. At its most basic, it comes with several interfaces for necessary components and a BIOS chip set to control setup of the motherboard. Many computer enthusiasts favor one type of BIOS over another and will choose a motherboard partially based on the BIOS manufacturer. For example, many gamers prefer the Nvidia BIOS as it is rated as one of the best for graphics applications.

  5. Hard Drive A hard drive, also known as a hard disk drive or HDD, is a fundamental part of modern computers. The hard drive is where all of your programs and files are stored, so if the drive is damaged for some reason, you will lose everything on your computer.

  6. Optical Drive An optical drive is a piece of equipment that uses a laser to read or write information on a disc. Optical drives are often associated with computers, but they can stand alone as appliances.

  7. RAM Pronouncedramm, acronym for random access memory, a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly; that is, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes. RAM is the most common type of memory found in computers and other devices, such as printers. There are two different types of RAM: DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) and SRAM (Static Random Access Memory). The two types differ in the technology they use to hold data, with DRAM being the more common type. In terms of speed, SRAM is faster. DRAM needs to be refreshed thousands of times per second while SRAM does not need to be refreshed, which is what makes it faster than DRAM. DRAM supports access times of about 60 nanoseconds, SRAM can give access times as low as 10 nanoseconds. Despite SRAM being faster, it's not as commonly used as DRAM because it's so much more expensive. Both types of RAM are volatile, meaning that they lose their contents when the power is turned off.

  8. Video Card The video card is an expansion card that allows the computer to send graphical information to a video display device such as a monitor or projector.

  9. Computer Case Computer cases hold the components that make up a computer system, minus the monitor, mouse and keyboard which are separate. Computer cases come in many sizes and models to suit any build, with options for convenience and customization.

  10. Power Supply The power supply's job is to convert the power provided from the outlet into usable power for the many parts inside the computer case

  11. Cooling Fan A fan that pulls air past the radiator to keep the engine from overheating at low vehicle speeds.
