What is History? Why should we study it? • HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION: A process of finding meaning of historical events. Historians collect information and add their analysis of events to facts they have judged to be true. • EXAMPLE: • Quotations from historians on a particular subject

Why should we study it? • KEY TERMS • Conquistador- A Spanish conqueror seeking fortune in the New World. • Colony- A group of people who settle in a distant land. • Charter- A legal document issued by a king or queen giving certain rights to a person or company. • Established church- The religion of a state or country established by a monarch.
EXPLORATION • What was the major motivation for European exploration? • PROFIT. They wanted land, riches, and wealth. • Describe the relationship between the French and the Native Americans. • They were business partners. The French and the Native Americans were allies, they trusted one another.
