Why should we study it? • PRIMARY SOURCE: Pieces of first hand information from people who actually witnessed an event. •  EXAMPLES: photographs, journals, official documents • SECONDARY SOURCE: An account provided after the fact by people who did not witness the event. • EXAMPLES: Encyclopedias, textbooks, Historical fiction

  3. What is History? Why should we study it? • HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION: A process of finding meaning of historical events. Historians collect information and add their analysis of events to facts they have judged to be true. • EXAMPLE: • Quotations from historians on a particular subject

Why should we study it? •  KEY TERMS • Conquistador- A Spanish conqueror seeking fortune in the New World. • Colony- A group of people who settle in a distant land. • Charter- A legal document issued by a king or queen giving certain rights to a person or company. • Established church- The religion of a state or country established by a monarch.

  5. EXPLORATION • What was the major motivation for European exploration? • PROFIT. They wanted land, riches, and wealth. • Describe the relationship between the French and the Native Americans. • They were business partners. The French and the Native Americans were allies, they trusted one another.

  6. EXPLORATION • What was the goal of the Conquistadors? • To conquer a large empire for Spain. • What was an effect of Christopher Columbus’ voyages to the Americas? • A transfer of foods between Europe and the Americas.
