The Business: A Brief History • In early 2000, Akeem Williams, Ben Janey, and François Augustin, were part of the PREP program • They thought about building web sites as a business and PREP Enterprises was born • Melissa Rivera joined in Sep ‘00; Stephen Dewey and Oren Kennedy joined in 1Q ‘01 Equipping the Church with Computer Technology Conference
The Business: Our Typical Week • New business gathered through mailings, word of mouth, and community involvement • Youth spend 3-5 hours a week designing web sites, mostly Saturday mornings • Youth also spend time monitoring the walk-in lab Equipping the Church with Computer Technology Conference

The Mentoring: Christian Discipleship • We bought shares of a company hosting pornography to raise these issues at a board meeting • Possible outcomes: • reduce hosting of adult content • “warning: addictive substance” label • Important lessons for the youth: • Empowerment: Intelligent way for Christians to raise issues and engage society • Education: Learn to study the Bible and do serious research Equipping the Church with Computer Technology Conference
The Mentoring: Christian Discipleship • We are doing research into • the effects of pornography on individuals, communities and society worldwide • correlations between porn use and criminal behavior • its addictive nature Equipping the Church with Computer Technology Conference
The Mentoring: Christian Discipleship • We also studied material from the Bible • Sexuality from Song of Solomon, a Hebrew poem about love, marriage, and spirituality • Confronting our society from Acts 19, a historical description of Ephesian silversmiths rioting against Christians because people would no longer buy silver idols of Artemis of the Ephesians Equipping the Church with Computer Technology Conference

Lessons Learned • The Youth • Many youth have the technical skills required to design most basic websites • We need to be proactive in hiring female youth staff • Youth who are attracted to work at PREP so far have not been part of the “tough” crowd • Project-based Bible studies are attractive • Youth ask lots of good questions • Connections in the community are a great way to find new business, especially the church community • Numerous possibilities for offering services to the community Equipping the Church with Computer Technology Conference
