  1. What electricity plan is best for my home? Comparing & shopping electricity companies in Texas.

  2. Choosing a plan • As a customer you should determine what are your needs for electricity service. Here are some questions to ask yourself: • How long do I need electricity service? • What type of plan is best for me? • Do I want a contract? Or go contract free? • What is renewable electricity? • What should I look out for when shopping for electricity plans?

  3. Plan lengths • If you need electricity for more than 3 months, you should look into a Fixed Term plan. The Fixed Term plan is a contract, however you can lock in your rate for the duration of the plan and avoid increased costs during summer. • Don’t want a contract? The Variable or Prepay plans might be best for your electricity needs, these are contract free plans.

  4. Fixed Contract vs. Variable • Fixed term contract plans lock in your energy charge for the entire plan. This is for customers who like security know an average of how much they will be spending on their monthly electricity bill. • Variable (month-to-month) plans fluctuate based on the market rate. However, you can switch to a fixed rate should you need to down the road.

  5. Prepay plans • Usually referred to as “Pay As You Go’ electricity. • These prepay plans have No Contact and No Deposit required. • Usually for customers who have poor credit. • When choosing a prepay plan, make sure you are doing an Autopay draft each month, or else you will keep having to reload your account to avoid electricity disconnection.

  6. Renewable Electricity • Plans for the Eco-Friendly customers • Typically higher rates, but the sources of electricity are generated from Wind, Solar, and Hydro just to name a few. Opposed to coal. • Refer to the ‘Electricity Facts Label’ to determine the ‘Renewable Content’ of the plan you are signing up for.

  7. Electricity Facts label • When signing up for electricity service, it is important to read the electricity facts label on the plans page of the shopping process. • Know what monthly fees you have incur, or how much your energy charge will be.
