This webinar, presented by Mette Lund, focuses on the intricate process of mapping elements between the European CDDA and INSPIRE Protected Sites data models. It explores essential topics like the compatibility of concepts, identification of gaps, and the need for extension in INSPIRE PS to accommodate CDDA purposes. Detailed discussions cover space objects, attributes, value domains, and complex mapping strategies while emphasizing the importance of expert involvement and adequate time allocation for effective conceptual mapping.

Mapping between European CDDAand INSPIRE Protected Sites (PS)data modelsMette LundCDDA INSPIRE webinar 1 July 2014
How to map CDDA elements to INSPIRE Protected Sites • Focus: to fulfil the complete INSPIRE PS Simple application schema including elements allowed to be empty (voidable) • Questions to answer: • Are the concepts behind the elements the same – definition, purpose? • Which spatial objects, attributes and value domains can I map? • What are the gaps? • Is it possible to cover the gaps? • Do I need an extension to INSPIRE PS to keep the CDDA purpose? • What do I have to do if I don’t have data in my database, but this is required by INSPIRE PS data specifications? • How to map between data formats? • Check the mapping rules with real data from CDDA!
INSPIRE Protected Sites data model INSPIRE PS Protected Sites simple application schema - limited set of fundamental attributes
CDDA data model Subset oftables and attributes for mapping with INSPIRE PS Simple application schema • geometry of spatial objects is provided separately
Conceptual mapping: INSPIRE PS data model – complexity of mapping INSPIRE PS Simple application schema - limited set of fundamental attributes Straightforward (easy) mapping Complex mapping requires additional thematic and INSPIRE PS discussions
Straightforward mapping • CDDAINSPIRE PS Year ->legalFoundationDate yyyy -> yyyy-01-01T00:00:00 1984 -> 1984-01-01T00:00:00 • CDDAINSPIRE PS siteProtectionClassification natureConservation using a default value for entire CDDA • Element • Format • Example • Element • Example
Complex mapping • CDDAINSPIRE PS - LegalFoundationDocument Law - LawReference - • Gaps in logical mapping – different concepts: • legislation related to the protected site in both data models: European CDDA doesn’t require information on legal act creating the protected site, but at national or sub-national level information on legal foundation document might be needed and available. It is currently required by INSPIRE. • Element • Element • Element
Important to CDDA but not required by INSPIRE • CDDAINSPIRE PS National Designation Code (DESIG_ABBR) -> siteDesignation ISO2 country code + xx -> Scheme missing ES10 • This project suggests that Inspire PS simple schema is extended two additional code lists: National Designation Code and National Designation Category • Element • Format • Example
Conceptual mapping: summary - main lessons learnt • Important to involve experts from the thematic domain(s)! • Conceptual mapping is time demanding, ensure enough time for this transformation workflow step! • Don’t force mapping if the meaning / purpose of concepts is too different! • The current CDDA data model is highly compatible with the INSPIRE Protected sites Simple application schema • Recommendation: to fulfil and keep the CDDA purpose, the minimum extension to INSPIRE PS is recommended to provide the national designations and categories • All the code lists used in the extended CDDA-INSPIRE PS data model are already available: • http://dd.eionet.europa.eu/vocabulary/cdda/designationtypecategory/ • http://dd.eionet.europa.eu/vocabulary/cdda/designations/
