OBJECTIVEs/STANDARDS • Objective • Explain how WWI led to a revolution in Russia and a rise in totalitarianism worldwide. • Explain the results of the political upheavals that swept through Russia before, during, and after WWII. • Explain why long standing dynasties in Russia fell during this period. • Standard/Umbrella Idea • The consequences of WWI and the worldwide depression set the stage for the RR, the rise of totalitarianism, aggressive Axis expansion and the policy of appeasement which in turn led to WWII.

Russia PRE-Revolution • Romanov Dynasty • Ruling family from 1613-1917 • The last two Tsars • Czar Alexander III (1881-1894): restored absolute rule of the Czar (dad Alex II assassinated) • limited: freedom of speech (challenge gov't), freedom of religion, speaking other languages • Pogroms • Czar Nicholas II (1894-1917) continued authoritarian rule • Backwardness: industrialization slow • Russo-Japanese War (1904) • Bloody Sunday 1905 – creation of DUMA (legislative body) • WWI

Russia PRE-Revolution • WWI • The hard toll of World War I on Russia fueled the Bolshevik Revolution and ushered in the ideology of state-sponsored communism. • Financial losses, battlefield deaths, destruction of towns, cities and infrastructure weakened Russia. • Easy prey for “lure” of Communism

  5. REVOLUTIONS OF RUSSIA • March Revolution • bread & fuel shortages due to WWI • city workers revolted • army soon joined in • Tsar Nicholas: forced to abdicate throne in March 1917 • DUMA set up provisional government

REVOLUTIONS OF RUSSIA • The prov. gov. continues war/ignoring suffering • Meanwhile, Lenin and Leon Trotsky travel country • “All power to the Soviets” • “Peace, land, and bread” • November Revolution • Groups of armed factory workers called Red Guard overthrew the provisional government without firing a single shot. • Bolsheviks began seizing control of other cities, ended private ownership of land, workers were given control of factories
