  1. Daily Agenda 1/15/2013 • Collect: Timeline Activity • Notes: Finish Russian Revolution (Lenin dies, power struggle between Trotsky and Stalin) • Review: “Who am I” • Begin: Characteristics of Totalitarian State

  2. Stalin Takes Over • When Lenin died there was a huge struggle to determine who would take over • Leon Trotsky – A loyal supporter of Lenin who worked with Lenin side by side during the revolution. • Joseph Stalin – A ruthless power merchant who would kill anyone in his path.

  3. Trotsky and Stalin engaged in a fierce fight to gain control. • Stalin worked behind the scenes to create powerful alliances within the Communist party to isolate Trotsky • Trotsky fled the country but continued to bash Stalin, assassinated in Mexico.

  4. Who am I? 1. Even before becoming leader of the USSR, I had a reputation of being a ruthless, power hunger guy. Some might say I’m the best thing to happen since Lenin. Others might say I’m a totalitarian tyrant. STALIN

  5. Who am I? 2. No fair! I was Lenin’s friend, I helped spread the word about the glory of communism, and I commanded the Red Army! Why don’t I get to control the USSR, then? LEON TROTSKY

  6. Who am I? 3. Russians love me! They write me letters everyday to tell me so. If only I knew that not-so-secretly, many Russians hated me for my German heritage and relationship to a crazy, rude monk. TSARINA ALIX

  7. Who am I? 4. I was the King of Russia pre-revolution. I lost my god-like status when I took control of the Russian military during WWI and revealed my stubbornness and ineffectiveness. TSAR NICHOLAS II

  8. Who am I? 5. First I defeated the Tsar, then the Mensheviks! I studied Karl Marx’ philosophies on unequal distribution of wealth and instituted and helped to rebuild the Russian economy. If you like me, great! If one of my commissars tell me otherwise, off to the gulag for you! LENIN

  9. Who am I? 6. Although I was considered a friend, I helped to bring down a dynasty that lasted 300 years. I also showed the people of Russia just how out of touch the Tsar and his family were. Some would say that the worst thing I did was get involved with Russia’s military during WWI. RASPUTIN
