  1. Investigation #11 Exploring Equality

  2. Equations… • An equation states that two quantities are equal. • In the equation A = 5 + 0.5dA and 5 + 0.5d are the two quantities. • They both represent how much money that Dianacollects from each sponsor. • Since each quantity represents numbers, we can use the properties of numbers to solve equations with one unknown.

  3. What does it mean for two quantities to be EQUAL? • A = 5 + 0.5d A 5 + 0.5d = To be equal, both sides of the equation must have the same value. This is a balanced equation. So if A = 10 then the other side of the equal sign (5 + 0.5d) must also equal 10.

  4. 85 = 70 + 15 • This equation states that 85 and 70 + 15 are equal. • If Isubtract 15 from the left had side of the original equation, what do I have to do to maintain equality? • If I add 10 to the right hand side of the equation, what do I have to do to maintain equality? • If I divide the left hand side of the equation by 5, what do I have to do to maintain equality? • If I multiply the right hand side of the equation by 4, what do I have to do to maintain equality?

  5. The Kingdom of Montarek • In this kingdom the ambassadors carry diplomatic pouches. • The content of the pouches are unknown except by the ambassadors. • Ambassador Noah wants to send one dollar gold coins to another country. • His friend Laura, who is a mathematician, helps him devise a scheme based on equality for keeping track of the number of one dollar coins in each pouch.

  6. The Rule… • Each pouch contains the same number of one dollar gold coins. • The number of gold coins on both sides of the equality sign is the same, but some coins are hidden in the pouches. • Your job today will be to find out the number of gold coins hidden in the pouches!
