  1. Welcome to Hogansville Elementary School Please take a moment to view this slideshow.

  2. How can I get more involved? • Join the PTO. • The PTO is an excellent opportunity for you to become more involved. This organization helps make contributions to the students, faculty, and staff by having different fundraisers and events throughout the year.

  3. PTO • In the past, PTO has sponsored: • School dances • Family Movie Night • Santa Shop • Fall Festival • Muffins for Mom • Donuts for Dad • Goodies for Grandparents • How are PTO funds spent? • Field Day events • SPARK 5th Grade Field Trip • Shirts for academic team • Buzzer system for academic team • Teacher Appreciation Week • Folders for school/home communication

  4. How can I get more involved? • Talk to your child’s teacher. • Examples of things you can do to help: • Become a classroom helper. • Mentor or tutor students. • Work as a media center assistant or volunteer to read to students. • Volunteer to speak in a classroom or during career day.

  5. What can I do to help my child?

  6. Encourage your child to read regularly. • Start early reading with your child. If this is something you don’t already do, it’s never too early to begin! • Make sure you have reading material. • Show that you value reading.

  7. Talk with your child • Share conversations while traveling from place to place. • Use grocery shopping as a time to discuss prices, how to pick out good fruits, etc. • When cooking, discuss the recipe (this is also helpful in measurement and fractions). • When watching TV, talk about the characters and compare shows to each other. • While reading, stop and ask questions as you go along.

  8. Monitor homework Have a special place for your child to study. Set a regular time for homework. Remove distractions. Don’t expect or demand perfection.

  9. Monitor TV viewing and video game playing • Limit the amount of time you let your child watch TV. • Model good TV viewing habits. • Watch TV with your child when you can. • When you can’t watch TV with your child, spot check to ensure the show is appropriate. • Limit the amount of time your child plays video games and make sure they are rated appropriately for age.

  10. Encourage your child to use the library. • Introduce your child to the library as early as possible. • Allow your child to get his own library card. • Teach your child the rules of the library. • Libraries often have story time. Attend if possible.

  11. Help your child to use the Internet effectively and properly • Spend time online with your child. • If you do not have Internet at home, visit the library to get online. • Teach your child appropriate websites to view. • Monitor the amount of time your child spends online.

  12. Encourage your child to be responsible and work independently. • Establish rules. • Make it clear that your child is responsible for what he does. • Work with your child to create reasonable jobs to be completed at home. • Make your child responsible for getting ready in the morning. • Monitor what your child does after school, in the evenings, and on the weekends.

  13. Encourage active learning Ask and answer questions, problem solve, and explore interests. Listen to your child’s ideas and respond to them.

  14. Thank you for watching. Hogansville Elementary faculty and staff look forward to another wonderful year with your children. Please let use know if we can help in any way. Catch the WAVE!
