  2. About this CD • This CD has information about things you might want to do in your life like • getting a house • getting a job • getting out and about • being healthy • and lots of other things. This CD tells you who you can contact to find out more.

  6. Living with your family You might live with your family. You might have lived with your family since you were very young. You can choose to stay with your family if everyone is happy for this to happen. It is ok to choose to live with your family.

  7. Living with a carer You can choose to live with a carer in the carer’s own home. The carer will not be part of your family. To live with a carer you need to have an assessment from Adult Social Care to find out if it is right for you. An assessment is a list of questions someone will ask to see if you are allowed to get something.

  10. Renting your own home You might want to rent a house or a flat. If you rent a house or flat you do not own it. You pay money each month to the person or company that owns the house or flat. Here are some of the places you can find a house or flat to rent. Click on the button to find out more. Private landlord Property shop Service shop Council or housing association

  11. Council or Housing Association You can rent a house or flat from the council or from a housing association. Lots of people rent a home this way. You need to put your name on a list. Then the council has to find the right house for you. If you want to live on your own you would need a home with 1 bedroom. You cannot get a house with 3 bedrooms. It would be too big. A family with more people would need a bigger house like that. You might have to wait a long time for the right house.

  14. Property Shop After you put your name on the list with the Council or Housing Association you can go to the Property Shop. You can look at the houses and flats you could rent.   17. Private landlord You can choose to rent from a private landlord. Private landlords are people who own their own houses or flats and rent them out for other people to live in. They advertise their houses or flats in local newspapers or in estate agents offices. You may need help to rent from a private landlords. There is a lot of important paperwork to do. You could get help from your • family • friends • social worker.

  18. Buying your own home If you want to buy a house you might need to borrow money. You can borrow money from • your family or friends • a building society If you borrow money from a building society this is called a mortgage. You might be able to get a mortgage from the Department for Work and Pensions too. Click here to find out more.

  25. Neighbourhood watch There are neighbourhood watch groups in and near Market Harborough. These are groups of people who volunteer to support the local police. This can help to keep you safe.   26. Police The police can give you advice about being safe from crime.   27. Living in a shared home If you live in a shared home you will live in a different house to your family. You will live with other people. • You will have a bedroom of your own. • You will share other rooms like the kitchen and the living room. Usually there are people who work with everyone in the shared home. These people help with things like • cooking and cleaning • helping you to choose what you want to do • helping you to get around • lots of other things.   31. CARE Shangton CARE Shangton is the biggest shared home for people with learning disabilities in Harborough district. It is close to the village called Shangton. Shangton is 4 miles away from Market Harborough. 51 people live at CARE Shangton. There are five houses supported by staff. CARE Shangton has a coffee bar and a small shop. There is a sign at the main entrance that tells you when the shop and coffee bar is open. You can call them on 01858 545 401 or 01858 545 402 CARE also have shared houses in Market Harborough and Kibworth.

  40. Breaking the barriers The breaking the barriers team is part of Leicestershire county council. An employment development officer from breaking the barriers can help you to find and keep a job. They know a lot about different jobs you could do. They can help you to learn new skills for your job. A job coach can help you to use transport like a bus or train to get to work.

  47. Applying for a job To ask for a job you might need to fill out an application form. An application form has questions about you and why you would be good at the job. You can get help to fill out the application form. You should fill out the application form neatly. You should send it off in time. There is usually a closing date for job applications. This means that if you apply after that date it is too late.

Going for an interview • After you send off your application form you might get an interview. • This is when you meet someone to talk about why you should get the job. • You can take someone with you to support you at the interview. • You have to answer questions about • your hobbies • your work experience • why you would be good at the job • and other things. • You can ask questions too.

  49. After the interview Sometimes you will find out at the interview if you have got the job. Usually you will get a letter after the interview. The letter will say whether you have got the job or not. If you have not got a letter after about 2 weeks you can call the company. You can ask when they will tell you if you got the job. Be polite because they might not have decided yet.

  50. Work and benefits Part time work is paid work that you do for less than 16 hours each week. Full time work is paid work that you do for more than 16 hours each week. Voluntary work is when you go out to work but you do not get paid. The amount of money you get in benefits might change if you start work.
