  5. Nervous System • Relatively complex nervous system • Octopus is the most complex. • The octopus is thought to be among the most intelligent of all invertebrates, with a mental capacity equal to a domestic cat. • Strong senses • Variety of organ systems • Large, complex eyes.

  6. Circulatory System • Open circulatory system • Blood is collected from the gills-- pumped through the heart-- released into spaces in the tissues-- returns to the gills and then to the heart.

  7. Digestive System • The digestive tract is complete • Ciliated • Mouth, anus and complex stomach

  8. Excretory System • Excretory functions carried out by a pair of nephridia (tubular structures that collect fluids from the coelom and exchange salts and other substances with body tissues) • The nephridia empty into the mantle cavity.

  9. Locomotion • Herbivores= gliders (waves of muscular contraction) • Cephalopods= jet propulsion, in which water is rapidly expelled from the mantle cavity out of the siphon • Squid is the fastest of any aquatic invertebrate • Bivalves= foot developed into a tool for burrowing

Skeletal Type • Invertebrates (All soft bodied) • Most have hard calcium carbonate shell • Some lost shells completely during their evolution i.e. slugs, squids and octopuses • Polyplacophora: shell with 8 plates • Gastropoda: usually coiled shell • Bivalvia: flat shell w/ 2 valves • Cephalopoda: internal or external; some absent

  11. Sensory Structures • Large, complex eyes • Squid have specialized polarization vision, which allows them to successfully locate and capture transparent prey in water.

  12. Reproduction • Sexually • Most stay one sex for their entire life • Some are hermaphrodites and function as both male and female

  13. Gas Exchange • Use gills with extensive capillary network and countercurrent flow for gas exchange.
