1. On-line multimedial collaboration with SURFnet Peter Hinrich, SURFnet

2. Outline • SURFnet organisation • Network and lightpaths for science • Contest Enlighten Your Research • SURFfederation • Goup Communication • Sharing multimedia content: SURFmedia • Online collaboration: SURFgroepen • High definition videoconferencing

3. What is SURFnet? • Development and exploitation of the Dutch National Research Network • 100% ownership: SURF Foundation • Not for profit, 60 employees • 180 connected organisations, 1 million users • Innovation funded by subsidies • Exploitation funded by connection fees @FOOTER@

4. The SURFfamily

5. SURFnet6 overview • The first nation-wide hybrid optical and packet switching infrastructure • Based on 6000+ km of SURFnet-owned managed dark fiber, all the way to the customers premises • SURFnet6 delivers 1/10 Gbit/s IP services (native IPv4 and IPv6) plus lightpath provisioning: • Over a single transmission infrastructure • Managed via a single control plane • Hence, in an economically sound way

6. SURFnet6: the world first hybrid network Hamburg Muenster Aachen

7. Advantages of lightpaths Advantages for institutions • Lightpaths provide safe high-speed connections (1G, 10G) with an excellent quality (low and predictable latency, no jitter) • Lightpaths facilitate applications that don’t function optimal using the regular internet Advantages for researchers • High bandwidth • Dedicated bandwith • Low, predictable latency • Relatively low costs Lightpath speeds: 150 Mbit/s, 600 Mbit/s, 1 Gbit/s, 10 Gbit/s

8. Fixed lightpaths • Succesfull service of SURFnet6 • Fixed from A to B • Fixed capacity • Always available • OPN • Long set-up time (weeks) SURFnet, grensverleggend netwerk voor hoger onderwijs en onderzoek

9. Dynamic lightpaths • From A to ’The World’ … • On demand • Variable Speed • Set-up time: seconds! • Own resources • 1 port reaches whole network • Several ports possible SURFnet, grensverleggend netwerk voor hoger onderwijs en onderzoek

10. Applications • General ICT services • Sharing scientific instruments • Sharing Media • Storage • Backup • Costs • … SURFnet, grensverleggend netwerk voor hoger onderwijs en onderzoek
