  1. Whenever an organ inside the abdominal cavity, most probably the intestine protrudes through a weak or torn spot of the muscle wall and bulges out, the outgrown part is termed as a ‘hernia’ which then tightly pushes against the skin and causes severe pain and restriction in motion. One can typically see or feel the hernial growth over the specific spot on the skin. A hernia isn’t dangerous in its initial stages and can be pushed back through the weak spot easily. However, herniated tissues are at risk of strangling themselves and losing blood supply. In this case, they may gradually degrade and develop infections. A hernial growth at this stage can potentially cause loss of life. Indians, being genetically born with weak muscle walls, are more prone to hernial growths than any other country’s population. About 27% of males and 3% of females develop a groin hernia at some time in their life. Groin hernias occur most often before the age of one and after the age of fifty.

  2. What Are The Causes Hernia? The weakness in muscle can be congenital, or it can occur later in adulthood. Hernial growths are mostly caused due to activities which severely strain and weaken the abdominal cavity muscles. An organ or tissue protrudes through the weak muscle wall due to the pressure caused by: • Lifting heavyweights • Coughing constantly and vigorously • Being obese for many years • Straining while pooping or urinating • Abnormal fluid activities in the abdominal cavity. • Growing older than the age of 70 • Chainsmoking and heavy drinking • Pregnancy

  3. What Are The Complications of Hernia? If not look upon in time, the hernia might grow to cause severe complications that will require emergency treatment. The most severe complications of hernia include: Damage To The Surrounding Tissues As the protrusion doesn’t stop until repaired surgically, the growth keeps enlarging and putting pressure on the surrounding muscles and tissues, causing severe pain and swelling over the entire region. In men, hernias that occur in the groin area and keeping growing can push inside the scrotum, causing severe discomfort and pain while moving the body.

  4. Incarceration Of The Hernia When the hernia grows out pushing out parts of the abdomen, it can partially or entirely obstruct the outflow of bowels causing constipation, nausea, vomiting and severe pain while passing gas. Strangulation As the hernia is trapped into the weak muscle spot, it hardens and gets strangulated. This blockage may cut off the blood supply to the herniated cells ultimately infecting them. The same hernial growth can strangulate other organs and cut off their blood supply which may lead to organ failures.

  5. What Are The Symptoms of Hernia? Some types of hernia are asymptomatic and hard to detect in the initial stages. Still, the following signs and symptoms may arise due to abnormalities in the hernia growth: • A noticeable painless lump over the groin or other parts of the stomach • A painful lump which is swollen and tender. • Feeling nauseous or constipated. • Feel without any actual symptoms for illness. • Pain or discomfort in the affected area when bending over, coughing, or lifting objects. • Prolonged pain in the stomach even when no lump is present • Trouble in bowel movements causing irritation, nausea and vomiting. In newborn kids, the hernia mostly becomes visible only while the baby cries or strains while excreting. The common symptoms in kids include: • Loss of appetite • Being irritable and persistent crying
