Caravans transporting imports from China and India crossed the desert on their way to Constantinople or Alexandria. Italian ships then carried the commodities to European ports. For generations, intermediaries have been a component of India's import-export analysis and exporting. It's partly due to the disparities in native languages and the distances traversed. The spice trade in the 1400s was no exception. Spices were in high demand since Europeans lacked refrigeration. It meant that they had to preserve meat with a lot of salt or risk getting half-rotten meat. The spice trade grew out of the European spice market. Herbs were difficult to come by since they were produced in jungles distant from Europe. It wasn't simple, and the lengthy overland voyage to the spice-rich countries required numerous intermediaries. Each middleman tacked on a fee, raising the price of the spice at each stage.
