  9. Hallmarks of Dual Language Programs Separation of Language- In early elementary grades, teachers speak only targeted language during specific instructional time. Purposeful Instruction in the Area of Multiculturalism- Throughout their academic life, students are exposed and supported with issues related to race and ethnicity. After all, how good is it to speak a language if you don’t understand the culture attached to it? Biliteralism- Students will be supported through literacy in both Spanish and English

  10. The Research: Thomas and Collier • Comparison of English Language Learners’ Long Term K-12 • Achievement on Standardized Tests in English • (Based on 210,000 student records in 5 school districts across the U.S.)

  11. For how long have DL programs been around? • The first Dual Language Program in the USA took place in Dade County Public Schools, Miami in 1962. • Today, there are more than 300 nation-wide programs. • 94% of DL programs are Spanish/English
