  7. Audience meaningNothing is done by accident… • We as Film/Media students have to deduce what we think was implied by a particular shot, angle, choice of music, sound effect, costume design or editing decision. • Remember nothing has been done by accident every technical and creative decision has a purpose.

  8. Describing a technique. • Once you have identified the technical aspect the next and more important step is to analyse its meaning for audiences. However this isn’t always easy to put into words. You really have to think adjectively! • When describing the intended audience meaning you need to select the technical aspect carefully. • With cinematography comment on the angles, shots or movements that in your opinion are the most symbolic and meaningful.

  9. Cinematography and audience meaning • E.g.: ‘the sequence where handheld camera movements are used imply that the situation is chaotic and that the main character is somewhat hysterical’. • What are the describing words in this sentence? • Can you think of other adjectives that you could potentially use when describing cinematography and audience meaning.

  10. Audience meanings? • What we learn about the characters • What we learn about the plot/narrative • What we learn about the setting/location/era • What we learn about the mood or tone of the TV show. • How it makes the audience feel.

  11. Words to connect technique to audience • This shot suggests….. • Implies • Shows • Connotes • Develops • establishes

  12. Analysis • Task: Watch clip Dr Who again. With your partner write two paragraphs analysing how two cinematography examples creates meaning for the audience.

  13. Assessment Task: • ‘How does the cinematography from the TV Drama extract’ create audience meaning’? • We will watch the scene 3 times. • Make notes after the first screening. • Use connective words – implies etc…. • Refer to main character(s) as protagonists, and any opposing characters or villains as antagonists.. • Write about one technique per paragraph . Don’t rush to cram in as many techniques as possible into your essay, take your time and elaborate on point. • Make sure you describe audience meaning as thoroughly as you can. • You have 25 minutes.
