  2. What is sound • Sound is energy, like light or electricity. But sound energy exists as vibrations that are not as easily detectable. These vibrations, when they collect together, are known as sound waves. These sound waves oscillate or vibrate at one or more frequencies. These frequencies and how they change from moment to moment are what we interpret as sound. Sound is audible to us simply because our ears are designed to detect and amplify these vibrations and the frequencies the vibrations create.

  3. what does the computer have to do with sound? • Before the invention of the sound card, a PC could make one sound - a beep. Although the computer could change the beep's frequency and duration, it couldn't change the volume or create other sounds. • At first, the beep acted primarily as a signal or a warning. Later, developers created music for the earliest PC games using beeps of different pitches and lengths. This music was not particularly realistic -- you can hear samples from some of these soundtracks at Crossfire Designs.

  4. what are some sound extensions • The "extensions" are hands-on activities which extend the investigation begun with the core project. These are smaller and less directed projects which are either suggested by students or chosen from possibilities presented here.
