"The Crucible," written by Arthur Miller in the 1950s, is a powerful allegory reflecting the Red Scare and the witch hunts led by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Set in Salem during the 1692 witch trials, the play explores themes of hysteria, reputation, and moral integrity. The characters range from the passionate Abigail Williams to the courageous John Proctor and the troubled Reverend Parris, each contributing to a narrative that reveals the dangers of extremism and unfounded accusations. Miller urges audiences to recognize the stark parallels between the past and contemporary society.
