  2. When did Lujan-Chavez open it’s doors to students? Lujan-Chavez Elementary School opened in July 2001, to serve half the population of students who attended Helen Ball Elementary School previously. We share our facility with Sun Ridge Middle School.

  3. Where did the name Lujan-Chavez come from? Our school was named after two Veteran’s who went to Socorro schools.

  4. Alvaro Lujan • Received Purple Heart • Died in 1945 • Originally buried in Bastro, Belguim • Now buried at the Socorro Mission

  5. Luis Chavez • Socorro student • Soldier in World War II • 36th artillery division • In 1945 sent to Italy • Swept for landmines and hidden underground bombs • Died when he was 29 years old

  6. What is the Purple Heart? The Purple Heart is an Honor for a common soldier wounded or killed in battle. This military decoration is difficult to obtain.
