  1. How to find journals and journal articles Eva-Maria Kopp, Christiane Holtz, Jutta Heller WS 2010/11

  2. Course Content • Basics of literature searching • Retrieving journal articles • Locating journals • Obtaining articles from external libraries

  3. Basics of literature searching

  4. Define your search terms • Break down your topic to its facets and find appropriate search terms

  5. Refining your search request • To optimize your search request also consider • synonyms, technical terms • foreign languages if applicable • different spellings (British/American) • broader, narrower and related terms • encyclopedias and dictionaries can help!

  6. Refining your search terms

  7. Phrase searching • Phrase = search terms in exact order / exact sequence of characters/search terms • helpful if looking for composite terms • Most databases use quotation marks to indicate a phrase • ‘‘liquid manure‘‘

  8. Using truncation • Truncation = substituting any amount of characters by a wild-card character • the most common wild-card character is the * (but the $ is also used by science databases) • right truncation:methan*finds methan, methane, methanol etc. • middle truncation:m*ller finds mueller, muller, miller, müller etc. • left truncation:*bird finds bluebird, blackbird, jaybird etc. • some databases imply right truncation automatically

  9. “OR”results contain at least one search term (A) slurry OR (B) liquid manure “(AND) NOT“results exclude search term (A) biogas NOT (B) carbonmonoxyde Boolean operators / terms “AND”results (shaded area) contain all search terms (A) methane AND (B) slurry

  10. Locating journals

  11. Electronic journals journal titles, not articles

  12. Print journals (+ electronic version)

  13. Searching ZDB the world’s largest specialized database for serial titles, offering 8.7 million holdings information from more than 4300 German academic libraries) • keyword general: science => 17872 hits • title (keyword) : science => 14275 hits • title (string): science => 1040 hits • exact title: ‘‘science‘‘ => 16 hits = phrase search

  14. ZDB – holdings information library call number (location on shelf) subscription information (here: current since 1901) here: for 4 yearsonly

  15. Relevant institution codes Standard identifier for libraries, organizing criterion of ZDB • 5 = ULB Bonn Main Library • 5N = ULB Bonn Branch Library MNL • 5/ ... = University Bonn, Institute… • 98 = local Branch Library „Nutrition, Environment, Agriculture“ of the National Library of Medicine / Cologne • Bo ... = other academic libraries in Bonn (e.g. German Reference Centre for Ethics in the Life Sciences Bo 404) • 38 = University and Public Library Cologne • 38M = National Library of Medicine, Cologne

  16. Access to full text electronic article via ZDB EZB = electronic journals database

  17. External libraries´ licenses of electronic journals accessible from MNL Important for students of medicine and related fields: • Journals licensed by the National Library of Medicine / Cologne (ZBMed) may be accessed from two special computers here in MNL (requiered password obtainable at the information desk) • Identification of those journals in ZDB database only (38M). Not possible via eJournals search in DigiBib or Main Catalogue! • use ZDB-gateway

  18. Checking out access via ZBMed licences (ZDB  eJournals)

  19. Retrieving journal articles

  20. Looking for articles? • never in catalogues! • but in bibliographies (respectively literature databases) • as those don´t give any location information, you will have to do a subsequent catalogue search (ZDB or DigiBib) for the journal (title) that contains the required article • most databases available at ULB/MNL automatically search our catalogs using SFX (Find it@ULB Bonn, Check@ULB Bonn, Fulltext@ULB Bonn ...)

  21. Using Google to search for scientific journal articles? yes, BUT • Google doesn´t know everything („Invisible Web“) • Google searches seldom come up with the agency used by University of Bonn  conditional access, fees • there is no quality control for better results use instead GoogleScholar (http://scholar.google.de/ with linking service SFX) journal article databases, scientific literature databases

  22. Databases and electronic journals For those subject to license conditions there is free access for members of University of Bonn only • on campus from any computer, identification by IP-Address • from home computer or laptop anywhere via special user identification attainable from IT-center (Rechenzentrum) + VPN-Clientmore information: www.hrz.uni-bonn.deService >> Netzzugang und -betrieb

  23. Access to databases www.ulb.uni-bonn.de

  24. Access to databases

  25. Subject list and types of access

  26. Databases containing journal articles Journal article databases

  27. For example: Web of Science • meta database for the sciences, medicine, geology and technology • licensed for University of Bonn • about 9.200 academic journals indexed (from 1945 on) • Updated weekly • marked lists can be printed, e-mailed, copied or exported to reference management programs • integrated reference management program (Endnote Web)

  28. Database search in Web of Science

  29. Search in Web of Science - results manage refine automatic holdings search SFX analyze

  30. Search in Web of Science – full record SFX

  31. Accessing electronic full text via SFX Title Source holdings information from ULB Main Catalog (if no electronic access)

  32. To view full text follow document link pdf-documentfor validreference

  33. Articles in printed journals (no electronic access available) Main Catalog  holdings of ULB / MNL and of some of the university´s institutes. Holdings of the German National Library of Medicine / Cologne (ZBMed) are not included  see ZDB

  34. Print journals located in institutes • SFX offers links to electronic journals of ULB as well as to those of the institutes • SFX locates only those print journals located in ULB and MNL • print journals located in institutes are not included, see  Journals Database (ZDB) or holding informations within Interlibrary Loan Service (Fernleihe) • ZDB lists information on journals (electronic and print) of more than 4.300 German academic libraries, including departmental libraries (Institutsbibliotheken)

  35. Google Scholar • use Google Scholar (scholar.google.de/) instead of Google • fewer irrelevant hits • prescreening of input for academic content (quality control) • linking-system SFX available

  36. Obtaining journal articles from external libraries

  37. Interlibrary Loan / Document delivery (ILL) • 1,50 Euro fee per request Warning: before submitting an ILL-request always check „Besitznachweise“ (holdings information) first!Fees become due even if the requested journal is located in the very library next door (e.g. an institute). • Delivery time for article copies depending on chosen format 1-7 days, sometimes longer

  38. Interlibrary Loan service (ILL) ... SFX-service will take you here, too

  39. Interlibrary Loan – searching for journal articles first look up title of journal which contains wanted article

  40. Interlibrary Loan - holdings information located in MNL-building if there are no local holdings click button „Auswählen“ (choose)

  41. Tracking your ILL-request ordered articles your ILL-acount

  42. Overview: what do I find where? journals of ULB (including MNL) journal holdings of ULB, Bonn institutes and non university academic libraries journal article databases, via SFX linked to Main Catalog, EZB und ILL electronic journals from ULB und Bonn University institutes journal articles from external libraries (Interlibrary Loan service) presentation of this course “ULB-NatWiss”

  43. From literature reference to written text Reference management programs • EndNote • EndNoteWeb • Citavi • special or campus licenses for Bonn University • www.ulb.uni-bonn.de/literatursuche/literaturverwaltung • license free programs (free of charge, web-based, other functions): • Zotero: www.zotero.org • Mendeley: www.mendeley.com • ...
