  2. All e-Stewards Face-2-Face Meeting Dallas, Texas – March 18th, 2010

  3. e-Stewards Marketing Program review *Items in italics are contributions from participants in the meeting

  4. Defending e-StewardsCommonly heard accusations and eloquent defense • We will be putting together an FAQ that will have all of these questions and answers in it. (April 1) • Today we will pull together ones we have heard in the field to make sure we have them all. (LIST) • Cover a few of these today • The e-Stewards Standard was developed in a vacuum, not a multistakeholder process. • The Licensing and Market fees are too high and are not worth it. • OEMs and EPA

  5. Defending e-StewardsCommon ‘attacks’ on e-Stewards heard by recyclers at the meeting • R2 is being built into EPEAT • Can achieve BAN goals for free. No need to pay them. • BAN is not industry friendly • No real ‘meat’ behind the e-Stewards Pledge program . Big holes means e-Stewards is not credible. • E-Stewards Certification is a higher standard than needed to solve the problem (especially hear this from OEM’s) • “Greenpeace Clone” • R2 more useable • EPA has endorsed R2 • BAN shines light on the negative, not solutoins • Not all export is bad • Companies ‘bought’ into BAN, too much influence • Will be difficult to manage the Standard and close loopholes as they arise • BAN has no defined way and set repercussions for abuse of the Standard • e-Stewards is owned by BAN, an activist organization

  6. Defending e-StewardsWas not developed in a multi-stakeholder process First, It was intentional not to make this a consensus process due to the pervasive irresponsibility already established in the industry. We sought to avoid the lowest common denominator approach. However in fact, most of the standard was drawn from multi-stakeholder standards (R2, EPSC, ISO 14001, SA 9000, NIST Guidelines). To this we added the Basel Convention (definitions and trade rules) to be compliant with law (negotiated and agreed by 172 countries). Then we added the practical experience and best practices of many leaders in the e-cycling business (e-Stewards) as well as occupational health and safety experts, and certification experts. Finally, it must be remembered that R2 is not multi-stakeholder either as it lacks the support of environmental groups.

  7. Defending e-StewardsLicensing and Market Fees are too high and not worth it • Biggest failure of NGO standards was not providing for a sustainable financial model to keep the program alive. (BAN has hired 4 staff FTEs) • Administration alone costs money. These costs include responsiveness to e-Stewards, Standard revision and updating, legal defense of the brand (trademarks violations, actions against free riders etc.) • Besides administration the fee provides Support to e-Stewards in terms of knowledge and tools (Appendix A and C, hotline, etc.) • Promotional Materials: Videos, photos, ad copy, etc. • Advocacy / Mainstream Media: Exposes, Frontline, 60 minutes etc. Only and NGO can provide this. • Lobbying: Federal legislation: Leveraging NGO coalition, GAO report, Recognition in international fora • Compare what these things are worth with your advertising budget, conference budget etc.

  8. Defending e-StewardsDealing with current EPA bias EPA Promotion • Goal: EPA promotes both programs equally • Letter to EPA from e-Stewards to get a meeting • Pressure from Congress • Pressure from our Networks

  9. Defending e-StewardsDealing with current OEM bias OEM Hesitancy • Goal: Break the wall, Get one or two to come forward (convert good policies to action -- Enterprises) • More investigations • Have retailers push • Report Card • ETBC mobilization • Expose on OEMs or large recycler • OEM report card • Positive News Stories • Consumer Activation via e-Stewards brand promotion • Retail pressure on OEM's • Assess and publicize differences in monitoring and reporting between e-Stewards and R2 • Expose on Dell re-connect program

  10. E-Stewards Marketing Goals: Establish the e-Stewards brand as the only means of truly identifying a responsible recycler. • Enlist an army of enterprises committed to using e-Stewards: e-Stewards Enterprises • Educate the media with pro-e-Stewards information and make the case for e-Stewards over R2 • Activate and enable e-Stewards: Support e-Stewards sales and marketing efforts to create an exponential marketing effect • Leverage ‘the many’: Obtain endorsements from influential organizations and enterprises • Educate the public at large about using e-Stewards
