  4. Unsafe Acts Summer Safety HEAT INJURY PREVENTION The summer season can be an enjoyable time of the year. It is also a time when the potential for heat injuries increases. Heat injuries are preventable. By following some simple recommendations, it will decrease your susceptibility to them.

  5. Unsafe Acts Body’s Cooling System • - Blood circulates closer to the skin so heat is lost • - Body sends sweat to the skin’s surface • - Sweat evaporates off the skin, cooling the body

  6. Unsafe Acts Summer Safety HEAT INJURY PREVENTION • Drink plenty of water • Avoid heavy meals at lunch time • Maintain a well balanced diet • Wear appropriate clothing • Use sunscreen • Follow recommended work/rest cycles

  7. Unsafe Acts Summer Safety HEAT INJURY PREVENTION • Keep areas well ventilated • Schedule outdoor activities during the cooler part of the day • Use the buddy system • Monitor those at risk • Use common sense

Summer Safety HEAT RASH CAUSE Skin irritation caused by excessive sweating in a hot humid environment SYMPTOMS Appears as a cluster of pimples or small blisters neck, groin area; under breasts & arms; and skin creases TREATMENT Baby powder with corn starch Cool shower - avoid lotions - change clothes frequently

  9. Unsafe Acts Summer Safety HEAT CRAMPS CAUSE Excessive loss of salt from the body SYMPTOMS Painful cramps of the major muscle groups (arms, legs, or stomach) TREATMENT Provide cool water - shade - monitor

Unsafe Acts Summer Safety HEAT EXHAUSTION CAUSE Excessive loss of salt and water in the body SYMPTOMS Profuse sweating - headache - paleness - weakness nausea - cool moist skin - tingling sensation in extremities TREATMENT Provide water - shade - elevate feet - monitor seek medical attention immediately

Unsafe Acts Summer Safety HEAT STROKE • CAUSE • When body’s natural cooling system stops functioning and victim stops sweating • SYMPTOMS • Hot, dry skin- confusion - delirium - convulsions, or loss of consciousness may follow • nausea - cool moist skin - tingling sensation in extremities • TREATMENT • Seek medical attention immediately- move victim to cool spot

  12. Unsafe Acts Summer Safety • -Drink plenty of water all day • - Drink electrolyte-balanced fluids if • you sweat a lot • - Drink at least one cup of fluid every • 15-20 minutes when working in hot • conditions • - Avoid caffeine and alcohol Water, Water, Water

  13. Unsafe Acts Summer Safety SUNBURN PREVENTION • Wear protective clothing • Use sunscreen- reapply frequently • Bring portable sun shade to cover jobsite, if possible • Go indoors for lunch or breaks • Avoid extended exposure during peak hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

  14. Summer SafetySunscreen Basics: • Choose SPF 30 or more for working outdoors. • Use a broad spectrum sunscreen for UVA and UVB. • Make sunscreen a daily habit. • And don’t forget lip balm with SPF 15 or more.

Key Points to Remember • Working in hot conditions can affect your health and safety • Understand the risks and the precautions • Know symptoms of heat-related illness and first-aid response • Use all available measures to reduce heat stress and keep safe and healthy when working in hot conditions

Key Points to Remember • Some UV exposure is healthy, but avoid over-exposure, sunburns and suntans. • Limit your unprotected time in the sun, especially during peak UV hours at midday in the summer. • Find shade or bring it with you. • Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day. • Wear cover-up clothing, hats and sunglasses. • Check your skin for changes every month.
