  1. Good morning everyone ! English Proverb 房荣杰 机械设计制造及其自动化(3)班 10101023023

  2. Suppose you are Jay , a girl ask you :“Dan has asked me to go to a party with him. What if my boyfriend finds out? I don't know if I should go.” Then what’s your answer? A: go with Dan. B: don’t go with Dan. Which one will you choose?

  3. In my opinion : • "Don't go.A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."

  4. It‘s better to have a small real advantage (优势)than the possibility of a greater one. 意思是:双鸟在林不如一鸟在手。 A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Bush mean (a) low thickly-growing plant with several (一些)woody stems coming up from the root; shrub (灌木) A bird in the hand mean something is belong to you. Two bird in the bush mean something isn’t belong to you.

  5. The thing that you already have is a bird in the hand; the things you want but don't have are two (birds) in the bush. You should not risk losing what you have by trying to get something that you don't have.

  6. This proverb refers back to mediaeval (中古的)falconry (猎鹰) where a bird in the hand (the falcon) (养猎鹰者)was a valuable asset and certainly worth more than two in the bush (the prey). • The first citation of the expression in print(印刷) in its currently(当时) used form is found in John Ray's A Hand-book of Proverbs, 1670, which he lists it as: • John Ray:(November 29, 1627 – January 17, 1705) was an English naturalist, sometimes referred to as the father of English natural history.

  7. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush now means that we should be happy with what we have and not risk losing it by being greedy and trying to get more.

  8. For example: He had one quite reasonable offer for his used car, but turned it down. Then he could find no taker at all. He learned with a vengeance that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. • 有人出很公道的价钱要买他的旧车,但他拒绝了。其后他全然找不到买主。他由此得到深切的教训;奢求不如实得。

  9. Any questions?
