4. Living Area: Introduction • the part of the house that friends & guests see • the “Showplace of the Home” • Approx. 1/3 of the building • family get-togethers, dining, relaxing, recreation and entertaining • Foyer, living rm, dining rm, family rm, etc. • Not limited to interior space

7. Dining Room • a special place for eating • not part of the kitchen • located next to kitchen & L.R. • sm. 120 sq. ft. medium 180 sq. ft. lg. 250+ sq. ft. • 2’-3” chair to chair • 2’-0” between chair and wall • often designed using ‘Open Plan’ concept

8. Open vs. Closed • Closed Plan (Fig.8-16) • Rooms separated by wall & doors • More private, and quieter • Open Plan (Fig.8-25) • No division between rooms • Small rooms feel larger

9. Entry & Foyer • Three types of entrances used for homes • main (foyer), service, & special purpose • All homes have an entry, not all have a foyer. • Design the entry to provide protection from the weather & good visibility. • Provide a coat closet at main entry • FHA req. 2’-0 x 3’-0 min. size

Outdoor Living Area • Porch - above ground, with roof • Patio- grade level, may be covered • Deck - above ground, no roof • Court / Courtyard - enclosed, grade level • Lanai - covered patio (Hawaii, etc.) • Balcony/Verandah - 2nd floor or higher • Atrium/greenhouse - glass enclosed • Gazebo – roofed structure in yard (Fig.8-76)

15. Special-Purpose Rooms • Home office • Music room • Sunroom • Ham radio room This could be a separate room, or an area in an existing room.
