  1. Bioethanol Hope, Kenny, Jason, Celina

  2. Introduction Bioethanolis the same as the ethanol that we currently use except that it is produced via the fermentation of the sugar-rich crops like sugar cane.

  3. Process • The foodstock is ground to a fine powder, mixed with water and then added to an enzyme which hydrolyses it into glucose. • This glucose is then places in an anaerobic environment (no oxygen) with yeast which breaks down the glucose into ethanol and water via a process known as fermentation. • The ethanol content evolved with only be at round 15% and distillation is used in order to increase the purity of ethanol in the solution to close to 100% • The reaction pathway is a series of reactions involved in the synthesis of particular chemical, such as bioethanol • There are more than one pathway to produce a particular chemical

  4. CH2  CH3CL Cl2/UV light CH3Cl  CH3OH Reaction formula refers to the text book page 149

  5. Implications

  6. Properties • Lower energy density • The OH bond makes alkanols reactive • However as the series ascend the influence of OH bond becomes less and less significant • The solubility of bioethanol show that it can be dissolved per 100g of water infinitely • The reaction is less violent compared to the reaction of sodium with water • Bioethanolis typically used as fuel

  7. CH3CH2OH(l) + 3O2  2CO2(g) + 3H2O(g)
