  1. Work Based Learning The OXILP/LawNet Pilot Julie Brannan Institute Director

  2. Where are we now? • Assessment almost complete • Begun our own evaluation • Majority of trainees were positive

  3. Grumbles • Amount of work • Pebblepad - although almost all preferred electronic to hard copy portfolio • Repetitive outcomes • Changes as pilot progressed • Would have liked more examples of work

  4. Likes • Their reviewers • Improved training (“It helped me to focus on my achievements and weaknesses and see real progression in my abilities as a solicitor”; “I found WBL a good opportunity to make sure that I was given a decent amount of work and also a wide variety of work…”; “WBL encourages you to be proactive, organised and manage one’s time well and these are important skills which a trainee needs to improve on during his or her training”; “I think a portfolio reflecting a wide range of skills is useful - it is an asset pool for me to refer back to”) • Meeting other trainees to discuss what their portfolios were like and if they were having any difficulties

  5. Learning outcome 2.2 Outcome 2.2 requires a candidate to demonstrate that he or she is able to: “tailor his or her style of communication to suit the purpose of the communication and the needs of different clients and other recipients”.

  6. Learning outcome 1.3 Outcome 1.3 requires a candidate to be able to demonstrate that they can “exercise effectively, [my emphasis] both separately and in combination, relevant skills in areas of practice, including: …. 1.3.3 interviewing and advising”

  7. Conclusions • 1. Certainty • 2. Consistency • 3. WBL does involve more than simply putting work you have done anyway into a portfolio. • 4. WBL does improve the way solicitors are trained.
