  1. UCPS Evening Education ProgramUnion County Public Schools Board of Education MeetingAugust 6, 2013

  2. Goal of the Initiative: Provide an evening program option in which students may complete select high school credits in order to fulfill high school graduation requirements under a “my size fits me” approach to learning.

  3. Students Qualifying for the Program: Students with vocational/job responsibilities during the entire, or portion of, school day Students involved with internship/apprentice programs Students with medical conditions or medical caretaking situations Students who are pregnant/parenting Students seeking acceleration opportunities (catch-up or get ahead in classwork) Student with less than 4 credits to graduate ( mid-year graduation) Consider beginning with Juniors and Seniors

  4. Students Qualifying for the Program: • Participants must be registered students in Union County Public Schools • Program would not be recommended for college-bound students to take classes and stay at home for the semester, etc. • Program would not be designed for students to avoid the MSL assessments • Courses requiring EOC testing may not be taken through this program without administrative approval. • Program not intended for students with behavioral issues

  5. Program Components: • Students will apply for the evening program classes. A committee will be established to review and approve applications. • First phase of the program would be located at CATA. • Open from 4:00 – 7:00 for 4 days a week. This would offer 2 90-minute blocks. • Courses would meet the 135 credit hours requirement (Both NCVPS and blended instruction). • Test scores and academic performance would be tied to the student’s home school. • Distance Learning Advisors would be certified personnel.

  6. Program Components: • Students would register for classes at the home school. • If an MSL was offered, this would be administered in the program. • Students would qualify for the program after 1 semester of high school as well as successful completion of an online virtual success class. • Funding for the program would be provided through repurposed Critical Needs funding. • Evening program follows the discipline and behavioral policies of Union County Public Schools and all the other school system’s approved policies, procedures, and requirements per the UCPS High School Course of Study and Board of Education Policy.

  7. Additional Notes: Students may accrue up to 4 courses per semester via the online venue(course) if courses required for high school graduation are available through approved programs such as NCVPS or UC Virtual. If a student takes 1 or 2 courses, attendance is required in the evening program 2 days per week. If a student takes 3 or 4 courses, attendance is required at the evening program site 4 days per week. The evening program is available Monday – Thursday for a 3-hour time period containing 2 90-minute blocks each day. Recovery of absences may be scheduled with the site administrator on an “as-needed basis”.

  8. Additional Notes: If at any time the student is unsuccessful (work falls below a C), more attendance may be required in order to provide blended support. Students who qualify for EC services will be supported by an EC teacher during the evening program classes. A program specialist will collaborate with teacher(s) to address modifications. Students enrolled in the evening program shall receive the same educational instruction, or its equivalent, as other students. Union County Public Schools may provide programs to meet the special schedule and curriculum needs of program participants. The instruction and curriculum must be comparable to that of other students.
