The circulatory system plays a vital role in transporting oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. It consists of the heart and blood vessels, with arteries carrying blood away from the heart and veins returning blood to it. Blood is made up of three types of cells: red blood cells that transport oxygen, white blood cells that fight infections, and platelets that aid in clotting. Blood pressure is the force exerted on blood vessels; high blood pressure can damage organs over time. Key issues include heart attacks and strokes caused by blood clots.

Circulatory system – Carries oxygen and nutrients throughout the body • Made up of the heart and blood vessels
Parts of the circulatory system • Glue into pg 72 • Find 2 Colors
Artery – carries blood AWAY from the heart • Vein – carries blood TO the heart
Blood cells • 3 types of blood cells: • Red blood cells – Carry oxygen • White blood cells – fight infections, kill viruses and bacteria • Platelets (aka cell fragments) – form blood clots
Blood pressure = the force that the blood exerts on the blood vessels • High blood pressure – too much force is put on the blood vessels and organs and damages them over time
Problems with the circulatory system • Heart attack – a clot forms in an artery that feeds the heart • Stroke – a clot forms in an artery that feeds the brain.
