  2. What we will cover: (questions at any time) • The system • Definitions & Abbreviations • Description & Operation of the system • Flight Tests & the G1000 • Abnormal Ops & Emergencies • Simulating failures • Review

  3. Definitions & Abbreviations

  4. Components of Garmin 1000 (see handout) ADC OAT, Pitot & Static instr. GPS / Com / Nav 1 Similar to Garmin 430 GPS / Com / Nav 2 Similar to Garmin 430 AHRS Attitude & Heading Rate sensors, Slip/Skid • Optional modules • KAP140 autopilot • ADF • DME • Stormscope Engine / Airframe unit Engine, Fuel sensors Transponder Modes A, C, S Magnetometer

  5. The Primary Flight Display SAM 113.35 125.60 SAM 113.35 • Slip bar: • ¼ bar = ¼ ball imbalance • Heavily damped – “lag” Expanded pitch scale: Can set attitudes ±1° (really!)

  6. The Primary Flight Display SAM 113.35 125.60 SAM 113.35 • Air Data Computer: • ALT and VSI • Digits distracting? • Digits moving ↑means altitude ↓ • Scanbugnot digits • Air Data Computer: • IAS and TAS • Digits distracting? • Digits moving ↑means speed ↓

  7. The Primary Flight Display SAM 113.35 125.60 SAM 113.35 • ADC and AHRS trend vectors: • 6 seconds • ASI, Alt, HSI (turn rate)

  8. The Primary Flight Display SAM 113.35 125.60 SAM 113.35 • Tuning Nav/Coms: • Standby (outside), active (inside) • Green means in-use • VOR/LOC – visual (not aural) ident. • Freq toggle, changing boxes, tuning…

  9. The Primary Flight Display SAM 113.35 125.60 SAM 113.35 • Displaying navaids: • HSI display: Nav 1, Nav 2, GPS • CDI disappears if no signal • RMI: VOR 1, 2, GPS, ADF

  10. The Primary Flight Display SAM 113.35 125.60 SAM 113.35 DME – conventional RMI – distance is GPS-based DME – Nav 1Nav 2Hold

  11. The Primary Flight Display SAM 113.35 125.60 SAM 113.35 • Transponder Status Bar: • Mode S • Auto, Manual • Codes, squawk etc

  12. The Primary Flight Display SAM 113.35 125.60 SAM 113.35 • Softkeys: • Context-sensitive: look before you leap! • Sub-menus & the “Back” button • “Alerts” button always on the far right to acknowledge alerts

  13. The Primary Flight Display SAM 113.35 125.60 SAM 113.35 • GPS: • Waypoint Status Bar • Cannot disable – but can cover… • Next waypoint, distance to go, desired (planned) track, instantaneous track (°M)

  14. The Primary Flight Display • Using the FMS knobs: tuning the ADF or DME • Bring up the ADF window; • Use the outer & inner knobs to select fields and change digits; • IMPORTANT: Press ENTER, not the FMS knob itself, to accept the new value. Pressing the FMS knob simply cancels the change. SAM 113.35 125.60 SAM 113.35

  15. The Multi-Function Display SAM 113.35 120.750 IBMH • Nav/Com displays: as per PFD • GPS: • Navigation Status bar: • Operator can change • Instantaneous GS, Cross-track error, Distance and ETA for example.

  16. The Multi-Function Display • Useful features: • Change map appearance / defaults using MENU • Use MAP softkey to overlay information • Topography, Terrain Awareness, Stormscope etc • GPS flight plan will always be overlaid SAM 113.35 120.750 IBMH

  17. The Multi-Function Display SAM 300° 9.8NM – Elev 357FT – N45°W001° 113.35 120.750 IBMH • Changing map scale: • Rotate RANGE knob • Press the range knob to generate a map panning arrow • Range knob acts as a joystick to pan cursor on map • More information displayed at top of screen

  18. The Multi-Function Display SAM 113.35 120.750 IBMH • Page Groups • Map, Waypoint, Auxiliary, Nearest • Pages within groups • Navigate using boxes to keep track of where you are • Navigate with FMS knobs • Change groups and change pages within each group

  19. The Audio Selector Panel • Similar functions to other Garmin audio panels • “COM1 MIC” – listen & talk • “COM1” – just listen • Audio identification of DME / ADF • Volumes • Coms, Navaids (not DME) have own volume • Intercom volume for pilot, one other for all pax

  20. Failures affecting the G1000 VOR 1 NO DATA NAV2 ADC OAT, Pitot & Static instr. GPS / Com / Nav 1 Similar to Garmin 430 GPS / Com / Nav 2 Similar to Garmin 430 AHRS Attitude & Heading Rate sensors, Slip/Skid • Optional modules • KAP140 autopilot • ADF • DME • Stormscope Engine / Airframe unit Engine, Fuel sensors Transponder Modes A, C, S Magnetometer

  21. Reversionary Modes ADC OAT, Pitot & Static instr. GPS / Com / Nav 1 Similar to Garmin 430 GPS / Com / Nav 2 Similar to Garmin 430 AHRS Attitude & Heading Rate sensors, Slip/Skid • Optional modules • KAP140 autopilot • ADF • DME • Stormscope • Note: even though GPS / Com / Nav 2 work, the data may not be accessible. • You may also lose the use of ADF, DME etc! • Limited navigation available – Nav 1, NRST Magnetometer

  22. Manual Reversionary Mode ADC OAT, Pitot & Static instr. GPS / Com / Nav 1 Similar to Garmin 430 GPS / Com / Nav 2 Similar to Garmin 430 AHRS Attitude & Heading Rate sensors, Slip/Skid • Optional modules • KAP140 autopilot • ADF • DME • Stormscope • Reversion should be automatic. • If it does not occur, it can be done manually. • If this is simulated (i.e. no real failure), all navaids will remain useable. Magnetometer

  23. What we have covered: • The system • Definitions & Abbreviations • Description & Operation of the system • Flight Tests & the G1000 • Abnormal Ops & Emergencies • Simulating failures • Review: Questions or comments?
