What is a PA? • NUSNA is a professional association! • Membership based • Operate under Bylaws • Elected Board of Directors • Hold Events/Offer Services • Join people around a common interest/goal • Examples include: • AACN: American Association of Critical-Care Nurses • ENA: Emergency Nurses Association

  3. What do you do? • Attend chapter meetings • Community service, outreach,and education • Keep up-to-date through communication • E-Journals • “Newslines” E-mail blasts, website, etc. • Attend educational summits • Attend annual conferences

  4. Why does this matter? • RESUME! • Show recruiters your area of interest through your involvement – not just saying you like a type of nursing • EDUCATION! • It’s the way you stay current with your practice, and learn about your specialty as a RN (new or otherwise) • The Clinical Nurse Ladder!! • Clinical Nurse 1 vs. Clinical Nurse 2, etc.

As you progress – affiliate • Critical Care = AACN • Emergency = ENA • Med/Surg = AMSN • Leadership = ACNL / AONE • Men = AAMN • Neonatal = ANN or NANN • OB = AWHONN • OR = AORN • Oncology = ONS • PEDS HEM/ONC = APHON The list goes on and on and on and on and on.   7. When should you join? • NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW! • You should join NOW! • You’ve joined NUSNA • You’ll likely join Sigma Theta Tau • NOW you associate yourself with your area of practice you hope to begin in – and you do it NOW!

Why join NOW? • Students are offered SUBSTANTIAL discounts • NSNA members receive further discounts with certain associations • http://www.nsna.org/Membership/NSNAPartnershipProgram.aspx • You build your resume – stand out in a way others won’t • Meet the people in your specialty • Get the info NOW about what’s happening – what people within the profession are talking about

What do you get? • Typically 1 year membership • Newsletters • HIGHLY discounted conference attendance (students can go to conference typically at COST) • Access to the localCHAPTERS • This is key when you’re trying to network – these association house the nurses actively engaged in the profession

  10. Case Study: Ryan • Ryan is a student nurse • He is a guy nurse • He likes Critical Care Nursing, and hopes to develop a career in leadership down the line • Ryan is very busy, but understands that the job market is competitive, and that as a new nurse he’ll have a lot to learn

Ryan Joins AAMN! • With the NSNA discount it was only 25 dollars for one year • Ryan receives news blasts that update him on the issues surrounding men in the nursing • Ryan attends the annual conference, for 100 dollars (1/4 the regular rate, as he’s a student) • Ryan LEARNS a lot, and meets top nursing executives from all across the country who give him their cards and offer their ongoing support • He also happens to have dinner with the Executive Director of the BRN!

Ryan Joins AACN! • AACN was only 50 dollars as a student • Ryan receives e-mail updates every week, and journal updates once a month – he is starting to see patterns in what they talk about • Ryan Joins his local AACN chapter- where he also meets the Enrollment Director for the Gradate School of Nursing he hopes to attend • Ryan signs up to attend their annual conference at ¼ the regular registration rate – a conference where over 5000 nurses go each year and spend 1 week learning about CCN

Ryan joins ACNL! • ACNL was a little more pricey – 100 for a student (1/2 the price) • Ryan is emailed the next day by 3 nursing directors from across California – welcoming him and offering all their support • Attending their annual conference next month is 1/4 the cost of that of a regular member
